so I saw this band live tonight

a band called One Crown played at a church around my area tonight and while their music was totally awesome, they had some problems with their sound system, namely, there was a hum, like really deep hum, then there was some heavy feedback now and then, and finally alot of the time i couldnt hear the lead singer very clearly... So, im not complaining, i had a great time, i just want to find out from you guys, How does a band find that place where they sound great live as well as in the studio, i mean, things can always go wrong in a live setting, but how and what technology do we have at our disposal that could possibly overcome these sorta sound glitches? hope you understood that if you got this far :-[

i agree with u here - but Vic also makes a good point...

I my opinion, if you gonna do covers, dont pick the obscure B sides that most people have never heard of and cant sing along too...
if you a cover band, i like to sit there, enjoying myself and singing loudly like an idiot..

if you doing your own stuff, do it well enough for people to sit up and notice, and not just catrry on considering you back ground music.

Hopefully there's some kind of match between the audience and the artist. Both are entitled to their expectations. It's not a binary thing either. In the folk world there are lot of artists who don't write a good chunk, even a majority of what they perform (Martin Carthy has been a working, performing musician for 50 odd years now and has written only a handful of songs). So I don't get on the high horse about people not doing material that they personally have written. I used to, but I don't anymore. If I did I'd have to ignore some fabulous performances from, for an example or two, Aretha Franklin and Muddy Waters.

There are some cases where you choose to make a certain bed and then have to lie in it. If you're going to play in an Iron Maiden tribute band there's no point in complaining if the audience don't react positively when you chuck in something you wrote yourself, or your own arrangement of Mr Tambourine Man.

So the parameters are a bit vague, I suppose, and different artists have different ambitions. I think the performer has to look for their own satisfaction in what they're doing and be happy that they gave it a good go - by whatever parameters they choose. You need to be happy with your own performance, and you need to experience some satisfaction. If you don't then you're just a wage slave - and there's probably better and more lucrative means of earning a wage.

I won't. As I said already: there are far easier ways to earn money than playing music - which must have one of the worst skill to pay ratios of any profession. If I have to earn money doing something I don't like (and playing effing Toto to please fans would fall into that definition) I'll do something that requires a lot less effort.

This is interesting.
Going out with The Tamla Kahn Band we only do originals. { I lie I think we did a cover of sabbaths Children of the
Grave once.} The crowd either has no clue, only expectation, or they are there to see us do our stuff.
On the other hand, a cover band has to face a crowd with vast and broad expectations in terms of what songs they would like to hear and from what artists.
I would think it takes massive talent and dedication to pull this off, not only do you have to do it as good or better than the original, you have to learn it.

Not that I"m a expert on anything music. But I played in a worship band, and turning up the volume, and reverb on my Roland Cube 30 with a Squier Strat, and just 'trying' to solo, and play a few notes, hell, even I sounded fantastic. ?
