Cheapie Telecaster what would you do?

Ok I've somehow convinced myself that i need a telecaster. I saw a real cheap Crafter Tele at turnkey in Randburg, and this set off my whole craving for a tele. this model doesnt have a mapple fretboard and of course it doesnt have the tele headstock, but for the price i think its a good guitar. The other option is the SX tele, these come with the maple necks and I think I might pick one up for under the R1500.00 mark, and I've read a couple of good reviews, and once again for the price it seem to be quite ok. The other option is maybe getting a 2nd hand Affinity Squier, but then i would have to wait for one to become available at the R1500.00 price mark. What would you do? anyone played any of these?

You can get the SX's for about 1000 at the music shop in Melville. I forget the name. I got a Classic Vibes Squire (AWESOME guitar!) with a Seymor Duncan in the bridge and a case for 2 grand but these types of deals don't come along all to often. I would take the SX over an affinity but that's just me.

i agree with Blu

given the choice between a SX and squier, Id also go SX.

The same way you get lemon SX, you get lemon squiers, and even lemon fenders.

I have a Crafter tele and I absolute love it!
When I bought the guitar for R750 brand new I figured I would never play it and it would just look nice in my collection but now its the guitar I pick up first when I want to mess around. Awesome guitar. I recommend it at any price.

I'd say the SX is pretty decent, played a few that were quite nice.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY. Get a nice neck pickup - that's where the cheap telecasters fall flat. In fact, contact me and I'll maybe have a sweet deal for you.... 8)

Don't buy a cheapie! The Squier's are great. But, send Neon Gecko a PM and check out their awesome custom Tele types, hand made, here in SA, under "B&S Custom Guitars".

go check keira's post on the SX tele.....I'm with blu and guido, I'd take an SX over a squire anyday.

Forget about this brand or that one. Any cheapie guitar will have cheapie parts, regardless of wether it's a squier, crafter or sx model. So rather look at build quality. How solid does she feel? Do you like the feel of the neck? How's the frets? Finish? How does she look?
Get a good base to work from and upgrade the parts with time.
That said, I am also dying to get my mits on a 50's Classic Vibe tele at some stage as well. Folks who have them don't seem to want to sell em though....

Ok saturday I went to a couple of different shops and played different tele's.
I played a fender Tele, a G&L Tele and a Crafter Cruzer Tele.
I ended up buying the Crafter for a ridicilously low price of R750.00 (50% Sale) and couldn't be happier with my choice. Of all the guitars I playd the G&L Custom Tele (R7500.00) looked to have the best build quality and seemed to have the better electronics, what a lovely guitar, but the neck wasnt nealry as nice and playable as that of the crafter of 10 times cheaper. obviously the Crafter is a budget guitar and some of the components tell the clear tale of that, the selector knob the most, but all this is upgradeable. its also a string through the body guitar and i'm very, very impressed with how easy the guitar plays!!!! ?

to be totally honest I was somewhat underwhelmed with the Fender, stilla great guitar with all the great goodies, but with the pricetag! If things were different and money wasnt an object i would have probably gone for the G&L!

But I'm very happy with my Crafter Tele!!!! ? ? ?

The G&L and Fender aren't supposed to be cheapies hey, so one would expect them to be better quality (and be really disapointed if the standard wasn't up to par hey).
But ja, great find! You have a guitar that feels great and can now, for a fraction of the price of a Fender, upgrade it to a pretty decent spec. Fender switch and two cts pots will set you back about 400 bucks. I have a spare Fender bridge and a bridge pickup from a mim std you can have for mahala if you want. (just pm me your address.) Then, as was suggested as well, do yourself a favour and get a decent neck pup. I have Tonerider hot classics in mine and couldn't be happier, but any decent aftermarket p.u. should be an improvement. So for about what you spent on the guitar, you can upgrade that baby to a pretty decent level.

I'm not sure, I think that they are clearing the stock. there's one or two tele's left, and a couple of strats, as well as some les paulish' shapes and prs shaped ones. do yourself a favour ond go check them out. I must say though I played an ivory tele on the shelf there and it didt feel quite as good as the black one i bought, saying that It may just need a setup because that thing was never ever tuned before, where as the black one I bought was tuned as I took it off the rack, probably with a bit of setup done?

my take, is that it doesnt have to say fender to be a "real" tele!

Anywho, glad you came right! Congrats! It looks like a nice guitar!
