Bad news indeed....in fact very bad for the economy when small business is struggling. Things are BAD out there...thought 2008/9 was bad but it now looks as if we are in for an even bigger down-turn. There are rumours of lower interest rates coming to boost the dormant economy. The credit crunch is also doing a lot of damage to small and medium businesses.

Werent they also the SD agents???
This is bad news... But i would like to know the real reason for closing down, not the speculation!!
And in a case like this, what happens to repairs / warranties for guitars / amps and the like??

My parents bought my first guitar, both acoustic and electric, from Andy's. He's a champ in my book, and he treated you like a person. Other music shops, once they see you're just checking stuff out, not wanting to buy, they immediately lose interest in you. At Andy's though, they always had something to chat about, always had advice, and were always helpful.
Wish him and his team luck in their future endeavors.

Yip my second home closed on Saturday.
A very sad day indeed, was in the shop for a while on the last day, packing accessories and other items. Any will be putting out a press release and has asked me to post it on the forum once its ready. Its been a rough ride for Andy and the decision to close was not an easy one for him or Eve. Andy is setting up a home based workshop and will continue to do the fine work that he has always done. Reason for closing well its simple the recession and impact of the downturn in the economy. As far as I know Andy will still be able to bring gear in on an order basis but I am sure he will mention his future activities in the press release. The robbery was the final straw for Andy and Eve. McGibbons is a tough act to follow in terms of friendly service and going out of the way to assist customers.
As far as I know the donate a guitar continues and so does the Acoustic forum.

I only got to buy strings and picks there :'(
I hope all the best to the man and his wife. And hope maybe one day he can have a shop again or something?

He will be there I'm sure, come what may.

This is really a sad situation for guitarists in the greater Gauteng ........ Andy and Eve are super people. I wish him all the best in whatever he plans to do in future ........ ☹

Oh dear... I s'pose this is a completely inaccurate analysis but I feel like it's a victory of K-mart over Mom 'n Pop. Not that the K-marts in our case are huge anyway but in the US there's a lot of people trying to turn the tide away from Guitar Centre etc. back to the smaller stores.

i left the sg i bought off giggsy there for a set-up, about a week before the robbery. it's still there. but, i have to tell you all, after hearing this news, i don't care. in the greater scheme of things, it's by far the lesser of the two evils. i've been a visitor to and customer of andy's store, pretty much exclusively, since i first discovered it in the piazza in randburg, for the reasons most of you have mentioned above.
man. and i thought this was going to be a good week.

Sad news indeed...
Bought my epiphone lp standard there a few years back. Great shop and great people who worked there.

Man that's sad.
I only got to visit them once, but that was enough to see the quality of the people. The welcome and chat was as warm as the coffee. Was wanting to send my geets through him one by one.
Hope he gets to come back even stronger.

Sad news indeed ? Andy's was one of the few places where the 'boss' took the time to serve his customers personally. Good luck Andy :sorry:
