The topic header made me think of a quote I heard:
'Writing about music is like dancing about art"
Good writing about music helps you to see the music and/or musician in different ways, adds perspective, offers new insights and helps you to put your finger on something that's been bothering you or that you really like but can't articulate.
There's an added side benefit as well that it can lead you to new things. You read an article about, say, John Lennon but in that interview other artists get mentioned and if you don't know about them or their connection to or influence on Lennon then those are new avenues to explore.
