If Gearhead's our Darwin, I vote Singe for our Dawkins ?
Well, I think Gearhead's got a point. But let's all remember that people liked the sound of these instruments from hearing them live and on record. People didn't suddenly decide these guitars were desirable because they'd got old. People were looking out for '68 Strats in '74. People were looking out for '59 LPs in '65. People had heard these things or seen them/held them, and desired them for their qualities as instruments.
I do think there was some artificial selection in that those pros often had a chance to go through a couple and choose good ones to play. But sometimes they didn't. Sunburst LPs were rare enough in the '60s that pros who could afford it pretty much bought the first one that came up for sale before someone else got it. And yet most of them sound amazingly better than anything up to the 2000 reissues with after market pickups.
and some of the most iconic versions, (claptons blackie and brownie) were mutts.
Im with Mika... I think folks get all caught up in the "mojo" of it. Some folks anyways.
Its almost as if theres some sort of bragging right o owning a vintage instrument... as if its somehow better than everything else just because its old.
Ive had some geezer try sell me a vintage ibby les paul for R4000... only... it was one of the crap ones, hollow top, bolt on neck, damaged truss. "... but its vintage" he tells me..LOL
