I've got the Roland RH-200 Monitoring headphones a while back, should be around your price range, I have no issues with mine, the sound is purdy good.

Had most of them.

I really like some of the Sennheisers (especially the HD250s), but the cables are too thin and break with monotonous (and expensive) regularity - especially as they use a wire which splits to each earpiece.
Roland RH200s are nice sounding too... if you have Japanese size ears. I find they get uncomfortable after a few hours.
Fostex are the ticket - solid, good sounding, good isolation, solid single cable.

Got the HD480 - replaced the cable 3 times $$$$ - now I just repair them, it's difficult because I think it silver wire and doesn't solder easily.

The Sennheiser HD465 & the HD205 looks good and they fall under my price range. I just don’t like the rotatable hear cup on the HD205’s.
The main thing I’m looking for is obviously good quality sound and they must be comfortable.

Closed back is pretty important for recording or late-night listening, so the HD 465s are out. HD 205s are designed for DJs, so are going to have a hyped low end.

Seriously dude, look at the Fostex. Much as I love Sennheisers, the ones suitable for recording are in the R3K price range.

i use Sennheiser HD202,i paid like R250 for 'em and i really like 'em...i know studio headphones normally cost a hell of alot more,but these work for me

Go upstairs at Bothners Plumstead - ask for Dave of Greg - tell them you're looking for cans in your price bracket and were recommended the T40RPII's by Gareth that used to work downstairs - when they show them to you, tell them how much you have cash and ask them if they can do a nice deal for you

I swear by Sennheisers. I have 2 pairs(both wireless) and I wouldn't swap them for anything.

For recording, I have the big Phillips set(not sure on the model number) and it sounds fan-friggen-tastic
