I use the iPad for:
1. my daily news
2. magazine subscriptions (National geographic is amazing on iPad!)
3. AC-7 Core controls my recording studio software wirelessly. this means I can sit in the booth & record myself playing guitar without having to run back & forth to the PC.
4. I use iRealbook & PDF readers for gigs. No more carying around sheet music books. (And it's backlit so I don't need a music stand light)
5. Twitter, Facebook and general internet browsing.
6. I buy & read books - ($10 to $15 a book, available instantly. Cheaper than any bookshop in S.A)
7. games
Great thanks. It does seem like it will be useful. And I guess there'll be much more even.

I use my wife's iPad to do all browsing and mailing I used to do on PC, but with the tablet it is more sociable. Like you can read a book while there's people around, you can sit on the couch and read the tablet. You don't bring out a laptop to quickly look up who played next to Mark Wahlberg in the Italian Job (poor example, I know ? ) on IMDB, but if you do it on a tablet people are okay with that. The Wikipanion works better than looking up on Wikipedia, the YouTube app is handier than browsing to youtube.com and so forth.
I chose to get the non-3G version since I don't believe in taking a web interface anywhere away from the couch. I don't think you should want USB to access your files, you had rather set up a intranet server that you can access from the iPad.
Or maybe I'm a yup :?

......and if you jailbreak your iPad..... ?
You could have Garageband on it to!!
but yeah i use mine for all things mundane i used to do on my laptop, like:
1) Read my emails from GFSA! ?
2) Use google reader to read artices from Gizmodo (My fav gadget news source, ?).
3) Play a plethera of games
4) GuitarTab Unlimited. Great tabs app with auto scroll.
5) Link it up to my iPhone for navigation(i have the 16gb wifi only version).
6) Streaming movies via VLC player. (Great for winter, ?)
7) Google docs app. I take meeting notes on it, and it auto syncs to my google docs, so i can access wherever i am.
Some people are against jailbreaking thir stuff, but i haven't had any issues, and its really simple to do.
Shweet, enjoy it.

Yeah latest addition to my apps are the super cool CAD program that's also free! Very handy for works stuff!

There are nice drum apps available too. I have Drum Meister on my iPhone which is pretty lekker.
There also seems to be quite a number of midi apps available... Although I am currently busy fighting with midi >☹, I believe oneday we will be friends.

Oh yes, other cool things I have been looking into is apps which connect through wifi and you can control your DAW (I have been reading about the functionality for reaper) from your ipad/iphone.

Regarding GarageBand for iPad, this IS available on SA iTunes so no need to Jailbreak.
GB for iPad is a whole lot of fun and pretty cheap to boot. By no means as fully featured as the Mac version of GarageBand, but you can definitely get some good ideas down very quickly.
If you have a Mac and use Garageband, your iPad projects can be transferred across to your Mac for further tweaking in the full version.

As far as "Jailbreaking" - I haven't done that.
What I did do is register a US iTunes account. I buy all my music on iTunes and I can buy all the apps that aren't available in SA.
iTunes won't take South African credit cards, so I buy vouchers.
Been using this site for a while - they have info on how to register a US account too.

I agree about how SA iTunes is completely useless when it comes to music. The selection of Apps/Games is even quite limited while the music is completely non-existent.
When I get around to it, I will probably go the route of getting a US account. I spoke to one of the managers of an iStore and he said the reason they will not sell music on iTunes in SA was because our copyright laws were way too weak and unenforced for Apple's liking. Not sure if that's the real reason but he said they are not expecting iTunes in SA to EVER carry music.
I personally think it could also be that having music available on iTunes in SA would make for some devastating competition for the likes of Musica and Look & Listen and would probably shut their doors, or at least many of their branches. Now I'm not for that kind of consequence as I know livelihoods are at stake, but it is pretty sad that because companies cannot adapt to such competition, we don't get to have the choice to buy our music directly from iTunes for our Apple devices. That being said, my suspicions could be wrong, but personally, I think not having iTunes in SA contributes in some way to people seeking out pirated music.

and in a short while you'll want to add a keyboard to it, I like 'em but not enough to replace my PC or notebook,

I just recently sold my Android tablet and got an ipad.. there are huge debates over them, as always (like gibson vs fender threads).. However, the app store really made the ipad worth it in my eyes.
The sheer number of apps that you can get for free is unbelievable. When you start paying you get thousands more and there are some AMAZING apps for R30-R40.
I use garage band quite a bit, just to mess around, but also cool to try capture ideas. It allows you to try different instruments, such as keyboard and synths, which I would never have been able to do before.
I have quite a few photo editing apps on there too. You get the camera connection kit and can edit photo's and upload them online straight from your ipad. Some say this is silly as you can do it on your laptop, true, but if I'm making a 2 day trip to Jo-burg, wouldn't bother taking my laptop, ipad can do everything I would need to do.
Definitely a great device. I was a HUGE apple hater because of their philosophy of business. However, the ipad is an amazing device, enough so that I'll put up with only being able to transfer through itunes.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned: Gorillaz did their last album entirely on iPad.
Korg has a bunch of apps out like iElectribe. And just look in any Computer Music Magazine: virtually all developers are jumping into iPad development.
I do like the form factor of the iPad. If I got given one I would certainly use it for making music.
Apparently one can run Reaper on it...
