Boss BR600 rythm editor, reaper and midi...

Hi all,

I got a question about midi, not directly related to the boss br600 or the rythm editor, but maybe more towards reaper.

I know I can import midi files into the rythm editor which works well, but it seems as though the mapping is different to reaper.

Is it possible to change which keys the midi sounds are mapped to in the reaper midi editor. In the br600 rythm editor
readme file it shows me which drum sounds are mapped to which keys (shown below), I think reaper starts at
around 60 or 70.

Boss Rythm editor is mapped as follows:

If I add a note in the reaper midi editor at key number 41 for example, I dont hear anything in reaper because the
tom sound is at a different key, but when I import the midi file into the rythm editor, the tom plays.

So, the mapping is out (I dont even know if the word mapping is the right terminology).

I would like to have the option of exporting all the tracks I did on the br600 back into reaper and still have the
midi available in its original state to edit.

So, in a nutshell, I would like to map the midi drums in reaper to be the same as the image shown above.

Does this make any sense at all? I am still getting to know midi... :-[

Oh and BTW, I am using the my drumset vst plugin.

Yeah, it's more a reaper thing - the Boss will be GM (the General MIDI standard - Roland were one of the main movers in the MIDI standards).

I think first prize will be to use a GM drum VSTi in Reaper - then at least all the imported MIDI drum tracks will work as intended. While note names will likely show up incorrectly in the reaper editor, it means that you can avoid having to remap the drums as you import into reaper and then again when you export them to the BR (or other GM device) again.

Drum mapping (also called note mapping or key mapping) - google +reaper +GM +drums and you'll come up with lots of info (I checked). I'm pretty sure someone will have written something to sort out the naming conventions in reaper too.

GM standards are nice - when I got my Roland TD-12 electronic drums, I connected it via MIDI and had immediate access to all my Toontrack Drum libraries, with all the drums being in the right places on the kit. No fuss, no fiddling. ?

I have downloaded the midi mapper from

because the links the forum.cockos site doesnt work, but I tracked it down to the above link. I will give it a shot over the weekend. It seems pretty easy as the mappings are stored in xml files which I can just create and map as needed.

I think this is just what I needed ?

I wish! ? Just interested in everything pertaining to music, love taking stuff apart, and have been around long enough to amass a fair bit of info. Not usually if you are importing. Opening a MIDI file is another matter, but if you are importing, the project tempo and time sig will take preference. Simple enough to set up your project tempo and sig to the correct values before you import. With MIDI, you can import to any tempo and then change it, but get into the habit of setting up the project properly as imported audio is not always as predictable (most modern software will try and time stretch audio when you change project tempo).

Great, I really dont mind setting the tempo and that stuff up again if need be after importing.

I think as long as I can get the pattern across, that will be 99% of the battle won for me.

I am not having much luck with this...

An example:

Kick drum in reaper is note: 60 and in the rythm editor it is 36. So, I configure it to be the input of 60 and the output of 36.

I can hear when playing the midi files (both original and converted) in media play that they sound different so some sort of change has happened, but when I import into the rythm editor there is nothing... ☹

There is another option of changing midi type, the options are

Leave Unchanged
Convert to type 0
Convert to type 1

Not sure what that means and if it has anything to do with it?

Any ideas?

MIDI file type (0 and 1) has to do with how the 16 tracks are saved - doesn't really have a bearing when you are working with only one track (like drums). Useful when you want to import multiple channels at once.

File type 0 is all 16 tracks stored on one track, but each with their own MIDI channel. The file plays normally, but editing the individual instruments is a bit more difficult.

A Type 1 Standard MIDI File outputs a separate track for each MIDI channel in the original sequence. This format greatly simplifies editing once the sequence has been transferred from one sequencer to another.

If you are trying to play the rhythm editor track in Reaper, it should be the other way around AFAICS. Make sure the track is assigned to drive the drum softsynth and that MIDI channel is correct (usually defaults to 10).

Thanks Alan, I have played with it again last night. I have taken the midi editor and set it to channel 10, done the whole conversion but still nothing. Although not having it set to channel 10 I think was most of the problem.

I feel I am getting closer though... :-[

Everything you have said has been 100% right on the money! It is finally working :dance:

For anyone who might be interested in doing something similar:

I opened a new midi item in reaper then, at the bottom selected channel 10 which seems to apply to all notes in the midi item (but I did ctrl A first to be sure). Then export the midi track.

Then in the midi file mapper, I select that midi file to convert, select the mapping xml file which I configured and the out directory.

Select the radio button to convert the file to type1, next and then begin.

Works like a bomb.

So, what did I do wrong.....?

I probably got it working 100 time last night, but wasnt importing the file that I was converting.... Stupid mistake and no real excuse, just selecting the wrong file for importing the whole time. >☹ I should be kicking my own a$$ :-\
