I specifically tried to pick an easy theme. Maybe I should've gone for something like PeteM's "Do whatever you want".

I'm actually worried these challenges are dying a slow death. C'mon peeps! We gotta keep this thing going. I'm enjoying it tremendously.

I almost entered - does that count? I think we should host competitions where the prizes are BR600s. That way more people will be able to enter ? I know it's made it a LOT easier for me to record myself!

I usually refrain from passing comments on entries because it would infer bias but what the hay deefstes your Nature Boy is the most wonderful example of Klezmer I have ever heard - it fills my heart with joy and makes me want to hire you to play at my big fat Jewish wedding. ? ? ?

I have bits of my song recorded but it sounds really CRAP. I haven't felt like that since I was in school, the night before handing in a project realizing that you're going to fail because you didn't spend enough time researching! I don't want these comps to die. ☹

Highway-Chile

Reaper is very nice. It has a fully functioning demo and if you like it the price is very reasonable.....cheap. No interface needed. You could go guitar to stomps or modeler right into the computer line in. There are people all across the universe making nice recordings with very simple setups.

Haha, that is too funny. I had actually planned on doing a Klezmer recording but I couldn't quite get the Klezmer sound to work. I didn't even notice the Klezmerity of this one until you just mentioned it ?

Thanks dude. It looks like this challenge is turning into a FruitarGeek / deefstes head-to-head (second month now). Well, it looks like you're going to pip me to it this round. Oh well, as long as you don't pick some crazy theme for next month... I'll be back ?

Ditto on Highway Chile. I used Reaper to record mine, no audio interface or anything. Other than my guitar and amp, the only piece of hardware I use is a cable with 3.5mm jacks on either side to connect my amp to my laptop's mic or line in connector.

I've tried with my "line in" on my laptop... Doesn't work well at all, my sound card was mainly designed for good quality output. I'm in the market for an interface at the moment, so I should be able to record good quality stuff soon ?

Care to share the homework you've done so far? I'm looking at buying an audio interface myself and have my sights on the M-Audio Fast Track Pro or some such. Do you have any opinions or suggestions?

@ deefstes - The M-audio stuff is great, but for the most part quite far out of my budget; I really don't need anything that fancy.
I'm going through one of my local music shops for a quote on a Roland Duo-capture interface. I mentioned it on this thread: http://www.guitarforum.co.za/gear/el-cheapo-usb-interface-wanted-suggestions/ . My only correction to that post is that it retails for about R1,200, so I'm looking at what the muso shop can do for me in the line of a discount :-[

Thanks Norman86. Just a question about that Behringer U-PHONO; I see it is predominantly aimed at providing an interface for recording analog devices (such as turn tables) digitally. I've heard it said that such audio interfaces, while just as good for recording any other analog device (such as a guitar), doesn't always put a great priority on doing so with as little as possible latency.

Are you happy with the latency that you get from your device?

I used to use the Lightsnake USB cable and while it got the job done, I must say that I wasn't impressed with latency and it is, after all, just a device to connect your guitar to your PC. You still then have to get decent software for recording, effects, etc.

There are some great open-source software solutions (Ardour, Audacity, Rakarrack, etc) but if you're lazy like me, and don't have much time outside of work hours to record in, then that's just way too much effort for a quick recording. Rather get a dedicated device like a BR600, micro BR or something along those lines. Just my 2c - I do know it's not for everyone and that the software route is loved by many.

If its just for recording, you can get almost 0 latency, so i have no problems!
My one also came with a host of software that i havent even looked into yet! lots of freeware recording programs and such!
