Hey guys I'm on the look for new picks! I've been playing jazz three's for about six years now but I literally go through two a week! So I started looking around for plektrums that really last long and can "improve" tone! Then I found red bear picks....first off....they are freakin expensive! Its about R350 for two shipping included! So my question is do u have any knowledge of these plectrums and if so any opinions? Also are there any places in SA that imports them?..Thoughts?
MikeM
Maybe work on your technique so that don't destroy picks so quickly? ?
EttieneB
Haha thanx MikeM but I have tried almost everything tech wise! I'm pretty squared away with that! Lol. Thanx anyway!
FruitarGeek
Dude. 2 a week. Ive had one for 4 months, I play everyday (+-5 hours) and its still going strong. Its the best. How do you play?

Grind sharp edges to some Mexican small change coins. Not a new idea, but apparently a good idea. Now how to get hold of those pesos...
EttieneB
Yeah I do a lot of hard attack funk strummy things and they just don't last. With the jazz 3's I found u have to really dig in to get some spank out of the sound specially for controlling the dynamics of the circus funk lol.
EttieneB
That sounds like effort GH I'd rather get their liqueur olè!
Any thoughts on the red bear stuff. Supposedly they make it from some or other super hard compound that acts and sounds like t-shell!?????

I would say give the Tortex's a try if you have'nt already, (Green or Purple). I find them to be quite durable, as well as versatile.

I use whatever pick the guitar store decides to leave sitting on there demo amps..... its an unofficial endorsement.

Use your fingers... not so easy to lose or to wear out. ?
mity88
just got myself an Ebow the other day, solves all pick problems...lol
EttieneB
Haha fingers would be a kind of cool vibe! So does anyone know sumthin about this red bear picks?

Hallo EttieneB
I had the same problem some time ago. I used to play with the green Tortex jazz, but they became to blunt for my liking after a week. Then I went on to the 1mm Tortex purple, which are better, but only lasted two weeks or so. A few months ago I 'discovered' the Dunlop Ultex pics. They are the same shape as the Jazz III and Tortex jazz, but made of a much harder polymer, without being too thick, like the Stubby's. I bought 7 of them, three months ago, and I am still on my first one. Hope this helps.

Red bear picks are total tone suckers! They sound NOTHING like regular picks. I was so disappointed in mine I gave them away. >☹
Warren
Red Bear picks are endorsed by Guthrie Govan, that's all I know about them. I'm NOT spending hundreds of bucks on two picks though!
I'd recommend you look at the Tortex and Ultex stuff from Dunlop which the other dudes have suggested.
Jacquesg4j
R150 odd for a pick? That's 20 regar picks! I would just stick to what you are using! Don't try them metal ones, the will damage your loved one!
Wizard
Jazz 3 are good.
Perhaps you need to respect them a little more.
EttieneB
Yes jg4j they are $20 a pick excluding shipping and the compound is supposedly some sort of animal protein thing???
Personally I think paying that amount of money for a pick is insane but they claim that it is def more natural to your tone! Like true t-shell sound! But still....crazy! I will check out the ultex stuff! And there is three other companies in the same vane of red bear!
Ill post their names as soon as I find out!

Plectra are consumables, so it doesn't make sense to pay a lot for them, regardless of claims of "magical" tone. They are too easily mislaid anyway.
I dunno, I still reckon if you're going through two plectra a week, you're doing something wrong. What's your string life like?
MIKA-the-better-one
Man would you buy a bag of chips in they claimed it made you a power ranger???
Probably not, you would probably determine they were trying to hype up the chips...
Its a pick, it will not change your tone to a point where it turns your sound around... Its just a pick...
The day I get all picky about my plectrum is the day someone should punch me in the mouth...
