Takamine make excellent guitars in the mid / upper-mid range (they make some pretty awesome high-end stuff too, but in that range they're competing with the big boys and brand becomes a factor). The build quality is great and their in-house pickups always sound really good plugged in and are (I believe) considered very reliable.
I bought myself a spruce-topped solid maple body (would be a bit bright for your tastes) about 2 years ago for around R5k new from Marshall in Woodmead. Sticker price was about R8k I think.
You need to go and play a few, obviously, but they're a highly regarded option in that range.
