The best VH albums where I, II, Fair Warning and F.U.C.K
The new single is a bit stale sounding, hopefully the rest is better, you can't leave the fans hanging for what, almost 15yrs, and then just put out a so-so album.
Hopefully they don't go out like Mohamed Ali

Watched the new single Youtube vid, I used to be a big VH fan back in the early '90s, before I discovered the blues, and I'm underwhelmed to be honest: DLR's voice has, I think, improved over the years but on the whole the new single sounds over produced, couldn't discern a bass line but perhaps that's just the fact that it's a Youtube video and running through my laptop's speakers. It's sure as hell not vintage VH and Michael Anthony's falsetto-ish harmonies are conspicuously absent.
Also, Eddie's playing on a rosewood board all of a sudden? WTF is that all about??
@ICM, yeah, Valerie turned out to be a salad dodger of note, quite hot when she was young though, but looks like Wolfgang inherited her appetite for pies...

ps Hagar kills chickenfoot for me, that and the fact that the peace sign is based on a crane's, not chicken's, foot.

I'm not a big VH fan ? but I checked out the "Tattoo" video and it seems to me that Eddie is in pretty good form.

This one is special I tell ya.. If VH puts a smile on your face and a beer in your hand they've done their job... and it's been a while.
Edit: thanks Dee... this is from the intro to the radar article:
It's been nearly three decades since the Van Halen brothers and David Lee Roth made an actual album together. During that time, they've split up, played with other partners, traded barbs, come together and broke up again, traded more barbs, and what have you.
In 2007, however, the VH landscape changed dramatically: Roth rejoined - for a real tour, not just a quickie track for a "best-of" collection - and founding member Michael Anthony was jettisoned in favor of Eddie's son, Wolfgang. All looked set for what might be some new music...and then it didn't. After a successful (and trouble-free) run of arena dates, the Van Halen camp went silent.
Early last year, though, word came out that Van Halen were recording an album, which sent naysayers and even an ex-band member (Sammy Hagar) into brickbat-mode: They'll never finish it. They're just recording old songs, they can't write new stuff...and on and on.
Well, that sound you hear, the one rising up to meet Eddie's chainsaw guitar, is of Van Halen - three guys in their late 50s (Ed, David and Alex) and a 21-year-old upstart (Wolf) - having the last laugh. A big reason for their glee might steam from the fact that what they've done here is unprecedented, actually, using demos of old, unused songs for the basis of a good portion of the new material, reinventing and re-imagining themselves in the process.
It's a genius move, of course ("Hey, we can't write young, so let's take songs from when were young!"), and it makes you wonder why other acts haven't done it before. What's remarkable, though, is that rather than sounding like three AARP subscribers strolling down memory lane with "the kid," the Van H

I got the whole album, really disappointing, sounds like more of the same, just not at all on the same level, almost like a Van Halen tribute band trying to do originals in the style of their earlier stuff.

There's a reason they never used those demos/songs back then and that same reason applies now.

A nunmber of tracks from the album is old material .... just never released before ...seems a clever idea if you have all these songs lieing around. 1 or 2 tracks were previously recorded as demo tracks back in 76 for Gene Simmons (he of Kiss fame)
u dont fix what aint broken ......
now , please climb up on that stake ?

Sounds like Vintage VH to me, but most of the harmonies are obviously DLR (some classic "slowed down tape" vocal tracks too), so I don't know how well they'll be able to pull off the stuff live.
I was wondering if they could pull this album off at all when I first heard they were doing it, because DLR has matured in recent years, which isn't necessarily a good thing for the style of music (a guy in his late 50s singing about nailing young girls is a completely different vibe to a guy in his 20s doing it ?).
Eddie's still Eddie - tight rhythms and riffs, but his solos are technically impressive aural equivalents of falling down a staircase, with no real root in the song itself. But then, I still say that the best Van Halen album was Eat 'em and Smile. ? <ducks_and_runs_away_quickly>

Seems like a crappy idea if the songs were never good enough to use in the first place, surely in ALL this time since VHIII (15yrs ?) they've come up with some new better stuff. I guess if they've used up all there old demos and songs that weren't good enough to use back then that this will be the last VH album ever.
Maybe this album will grow on me a bit like III did

you are assuming the songs were not on previous albums because they were not good enough ,,,that is not necessarily the case ..songs are rejected for many reasons not only that they not good enough. additionally songs can be improved as you go along.
