A small amp, however, gets you all that stuff (and a 20watt amp can provide loud cleans at club volume) making the big amps essentially redundant. And with a miked up amp, they're redundant even in the stadium. And, miked up, you can run a 5watt amp squeaky clean and still get all the volume you need.
My observations differ here.. Reinhard ran his Fender DR (18w) at one or two gigs and had zero head room, even miked. Couldnt hear himself and was constantly heavily driven, eventually tried to angle it up at himself but even that didnt work, hence him getting the Matchless DC30. My Bassman has zero cleans, try play something which requires Fender cleans and all you get is mid dirt, even with backing off the volume. Im all for amp dirt, absolutely nothing like it but when gigging I personally like to be able to control it fully so would rather have the amp squeaky clean and use pedals to dirt which allows me to choose how much and when etc. (while suffering slightly tone wise Im sure) ?
