To me it seemed that the only difference between the HD400 and HD500 is that you can more easily edit the patches on the actual unit on the 500 (why would anybody want to do this anyway since Line 6 Edit on PC is way easier and can be used on all the HD models) and also it has a few extra amp sims, effects etc. On the 500 I think there is also more flexibility with routing and inserting your own external pedal into the fx loop at whatever position you want.
Hi all, I've got a 'old' X3 Live and from my research into the new HD stuff was that the HD500 was the only one that would let me reproduce the 'dual tone' functionality, that paired with the FX loop let you get some quite -ahem- interesting tones that you can change - For Example, assigning the 'tweak' parameter to the onboard expression pedal for mix between tone 1 and tone 2.
I did like the flexability of setting up the pedal board a little differently, but not being able to add a 'metal zone' and a 'fuzz face' to the same tone was slightly irritating...(lol) But resolved by using a high gain amp and the fuzz face, then adding a dual tone of the same flavour, changing the cabinet and then assigning the FX loop settings to include my external pedals (wah & delay/looper).
No idea about comparitive sound quality or usability from X3 to HD series. I went for Guitar Rig 4 instead of the HD stuff, but somedays I wish GR4 had a FX loop so I could reproduce some of the things I used to do on the POD, but that is the only thing I really miss - otherwise a happy GR4 (ab)user (Yes, the POD is still in occasional use =).
