Hey guys, so school is really boring if any of you guys remember, I think the only thing that gets me through is fantasizing about being a rockstar and roc...

Try turn your bassman to the side away from the crowd in the future I found aiming it off somewhere isolated helped keep complaints down....

I did exactly that ? I remembered seeing Dan Patlansky do that at a gig, But i also stuck a guitar case
open in front of it as a sort of shield thing, and it worked phenomenally ?

Yeah playing in the school hall can be fun, especially when your school has a 32 channel allen & heath mixer
and fully set up PA and wedge monitors on stage ?
We mic'd everything up and it was beautiful, the best part is the whole crowd got such a fright when
we started playing because we were so much louder than the usual acoustic guitar and piano stuff ?

Hey. Put some real effort into your playing and avoid styles that are followed almost exclusively by men (*coughprogressivemetalcough* ? ), and you can get a small taste of that lifestyle anywhere rock 'n roll is enjoyed. I certainly have heard stories from South Africans who've experienced some of that within our borders.

Just bear in mind, most of what you hear is the survivors reflecting back on how they used to live - in much the same way as a lot of people get nostalgic about school once they're out of it. The main reason those rockers party so much on tour is that they're bored out of their skulls. They'll do anything, including crazy dangerous things that get lots of them killed or condemns them to a life on the streets - simply to relieve that boredom.

So all that stuff is often an answer to the fact that, outside your 2 hours on stage every other day - you're just insanely bored all the time. Bonzo from Zeppelin drank himself literally to death because he hated being away from his family so much. He also turned from a pleasant guy into a total thug, who'd beat the crap out of people, including fans, for no reason at all. Jimmy Page flew up high as an incredibly talented guitar player, producer, and rock 'n roll visionary... before heroine took him into such a steep dive that he arguably has done nothing of any interest (besides giving nostalgic interviews) since 1976.

Someone here already said that most of the people on this forum has that dream in some way or form.

But I remember when I just left school about 11 years ago that dream was very much alive and well with me. Basically all me and my group of pals ever spoke of was Metallica-this and Guns 'n Roses-that. Ok, Guns is probably the poorest example due to their crash-&-burn history but Metallica is still alive and well-ish.

It's just funny now when we do play gigs to see the odd band here and there that show up and think they are superstars. You're playing a gig that will be forgotten in a week's time and by no means will people talk about it for months and years to come.

Guitar riffs that changed the world is in my opinion also over and will never be seen again. The last I can remember was Thunderstruck and some things off Metallica's "Black" album. But that's just me.

Although I still play in a band today, I do it for the fun you have with friends and the 45 minutes on stage you get to act like Hetfield or whatever, and to play some new music to people, even if it's you crappy originals.

The chances of anybody, especially in South Africa making it with their unique music is very slim. So as soon as you make peace with that and embrace your gigging with that in mind, and with the focus of having fun, being a rock star goes out the window.

+1 Once you've got up onto a stage that's 50% of it right there. You've stepped so far beyond what most people experience. Once you're enjoying yourself and people are partying to what you're playing, that's 80%. The blow and the blowjobs and the stadiums full of people are only part of the last 20%.

The best part of being a rock star, from what they all say, is rocking out with your audience. And you don't have to be Metallica to do that.

but one thing i am going to agree with cos i am now at the initial steps , gigging is a rush of note ,the adrenalin rush is the biggest i have ever experienced ...putting oneself out there ,very very few ppl do that. this has been a personal triumph for me of huge proporions , i have conquered a fear few ppl understand let along venture to do....

i think i'm gonna go with icm on this one. i've only been up there two or three times, and only two or three other instances in my life gave me the same rush. no drugs or sex involved in any of them... ?

Hmmmm maybe we should just classify the rush from gigging as a sort of sex/drug hybrid ?

that would imply some sort of build up to a high, or climax if you will, followed by a denouement lasting anywhere from minutes to days. yeah, i think i could roll with that thought...

Its seems that this is one of those childhood dreams,
Like wanting to be a *insert undesirable profession here*
You generally end up growing up a bit and realising that
its not quite as cool as it previously seemed :-[

Hopefully my exclusion of a specific profession will prevent
anyone from getting offended ?

Garren, I'm in school to so you have my sympathies.
I have my fantasies as well.
I've been on stage more times than I can remember and I can't get enough.
Just one word of advice - Don't EVER let school get in the way. ?

School, otherwise known as the craphouse, is sadly important.

However, my matric June exams didn't stop me from going to Jo'burg to play in a show! Even though I now have to apply to university's with an 'absent' for maths...

My kind of ideal situation is just do well this year
and then spend all my free time in uni jamming and gigging,

I never said school wasn't important, just don't let it get in the way. If your music is important enough you'll fit it in no matter what.
Having parents that are supportive of your music is TERRIBLY important, mine have been with me all the way.
And as far as drugs are concerned, all the drug-addicted superstars mentioned in this thread are exceptions to the rule.
Very few successfull modern day rockers are drug-addicts.
I'm not saying you have to be angelic or celebate but be carefull.
Dreaming about drugs is not a good thing.
Ask Amy Winehouse....oh sorry you can't, she's DEAD. :'(

I think it would be awesome, but would get old really quick,
maybe being a rockstar for a day or something ?
