Getting back ontopic: most sources have Amy being off harddrugs for about three years already. Booze, yes, still, but no dope. Cause of death has also not been revealed yet though I suppose they would have found out before the cremation.

On the upside: apparently there is enough material for more than one new album. Looking forward.

Going back off topic somewhat - @ Averatu although I share much of your sentiments I have ask whether you feel that heritage or even nominative determinism had any role to play in Amy Winehouse's life choices. I was related to to great South African guitarist who had a substance abuse problem. In my estimation he was born with it. This became evident to me when he offered me a cigar to smoke at age 6 by the time he was 10 he was a smoking full time and together we had become motherly drunk on more than one occasion. By our late teens we grew further and further apart largely due to the fact that I no longer wanted to be an accomplice and even less be blamed for his infernal appetite for the new high. Over his truncated life time he had been in and out of rehab more than once and was felled in a car accident during one of his apparently rehabilitated periods. The point to this story is that his mother was known to us a chronic alcoholic and so was her parents in turn.

Not for one moment do I believe that we must make special concessions for the fact that some people are born with the odds loaded against them. Reading Clapton's biography I felt no empathy for him during his heroin and cocaine years but admired him even more in the end for overcoming his hereditary disadvantages.

Amy Winehouse and her whole drunk drugged out-of-control image was heavily marketed to the to the pre-teen market. The first time I heard of Amy Winehouse was about 2 years ago at my nieces costume party where they had to dress as celebrities. There were at least 5 Amy's there and I recall one pretending to be drunk and dig bottles out of the trash. These were kids ages between 9 and 12

To be honest I haven't really listened to much Amy Winehouse music until this post-mortem immersion on MTV and everywhere else.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the music is.
They say that dying can be a good career move.

The problem with heroin and tick is, unlike me having the odd whipsky in the evening and still not being a alcoholic, 90% of people who try it get hooked after the first try.

the problem, not only reffering to renesongs post but the others as well, is once you take a sigarette, you are HOOKED! and worse when you take hard drugs like cocaine and heroin. someone said one day, 'It takes a man to get off sigarettes and booze, but only God gets of the hard drugs , cocoain and heroin"
As for Amy whinehouse loss, its sad, I think she would have made it very big and successfull had she not gone the alcoholic, drugs way.

Well I'm no expert nor a doctor, but I think there's plenty of evidence to show that one can kick the habit. Elton John, Pete Townshend, David Bowier and Eric Clapton would be some of the more famous examples of hard drug abusers who kicked the habit and continued their career.

Or do stuff without developing a habit. I've smoked 1/2 a cigarette my whole life. Not hooked obviously. I've tried almost everything at least once in pursuit of experiences (the same reason I've been a lot of odd places), I did a lot of things many many times. The only thing I'm consistently hooked on is tea and music. I even gave up alcohol and everything else completely for years, just wasn't in the mood. People are different internally and subject to different external influences... it's very difficult to generalise but I suppose if one has to then err on the safe side...

Exactly what concerns me, this sums up the legacy of Amy Winehouse!!!!
I have 2 sons under 10, I see the effects of media on them. By age 3 they could identify cars by brand, (did not teach them) . I see some of their friends, children left to their own devices, learning their morals from the media because the parents take no interest.

I can relate. When I do smoke cigarettes, it's 20+ a day or none at all. I can't seem to find that on-the-fence-smoke-1-cigarette-a-day situations.

That's a huge part...

But not the only part... Personality has a big part to play as well. I have seen children brought up in the same home, with the same values etc turn out very different.
We also have no idea how circumstances and incidents can affect people, REJECTION is a huge thing, I can see this in my children, some are thick skinned, some are sensitive, I have to treat every one of them differently. And I have had six of the things, and not one of them is remotely the same in character or personality.
CHOICES, some people make wrong choices, I know I did, but I was strong enough to change direction. But what about those who are not strong enough?

We cant judge people because we overcame addiction etc, we have no clue what makes up each individual, the fears etc.

The question is where should our children be learning their Values, Morals etc?

I think the question is more how do we moderate what they learn... since what they're exposed to is only partially under our control.

Or a more contemporary example would be Rufus Wainwright who didn't just peer into the abyss but hung a long way over the edge. Newer drugs - his problem was crystal meth and he took so much of that that at one point he lost his sight.
