Sad face. I guess I'll just save up what I can then, and do my level best to get someone to smuggle it in for me ?
I'm not opposed to the stock speaker at all. But if I'm going to replace it, saying I ABSOLUTELY MUST GET THE SAME SPEAKER AT ALL COSTS is just limiting my options. Like I said, I'll be happy with almost any good speaker. No sense in pretending I particularly like one speaker over another when I don't really know the difference, or have the luxury of trying out many different ones.
I don't find the Muff tiring on the JC. I use the darker tone settings, a la Queens of the Stone Age. And I rarely turn up the treble, only doing so as much as I need to cut through a dense band (our music borrows a lot from garage rock and post-hardcore, so it's quite thick and busy).

Is the stock speaker blown?
henrebotha
Yes, it gave in. No surprise to me, it's probably older than I am.

Crap, I really should check out the classifieds on here...
Anyway. How about R1k, could that be enough for something decent? (Making some cash from mixing, seems only right that it should go straight into music gear. ?)

A lot of people have been suggesting 50w speakers. My amp puts out 60w. Is it safe to use a 50w speaker? I rarely turn the amp up past ~6 when I'm gigging, less at practice obviously. If I recall correctly, the stock speaker is rated at 65w.
Btw, thanks for all the help so far you guys ?

Jose at Exclusive Enterprises will refurbish your old speaker to spec for a few hundred bucks. I've used his services before and still have some speakers of his in my collection. 8)

Okay, I found that NAMM 07 Eminence speaker shootout, very useful in addition to the Eminence site. There's a couple speakers I'm interested in.
Questions for you lot:
- Some of you have recommended 50w speakers. My amp puts out 60w. Is that okay, or am I seriously risking the speaker's life?
- My blown speaker has been repaired once before. I believe it's the voice coil that died then, and now as well. Can this be repaired? Is it worth it, or will it just die again a year from now?
- How much would such a repair job cost?
Thanks guys...

Well if you've blown the 60W voice coil twice, I'd say 50W would be far too low. Play it safe and look at +/- 100W speakers.
Can this be repaired? Is it worth it, or will it just die again a year from now?
If the cone kit is available, it's repairable. You can also usually ask the person repairing it to recone with a compatible 100W voice coil. In fact, possibly the last repair was done with a more common 50W coil and that's why it only lasted a year.

You'd have to ask the repairer that.

i've had goooood experiences with Jensen!
And they were cheap to boot. R1600 for both ?

Alan, I probably don't have to explain to you that I'm bitten by the DIY bug. ? So that sways me in the direction of replacing rather than repairing. But if you guys can point me at a CT-based repair guy with a good rep then I'll definitely consider that, especially if it works out to half the price or less.

Jose has been in this business for many years and has proven reliability. I'm really surprised that I'm the only one here on GFSA to know him.
Give him a call or visit his workshop in Obs. He really knows what he's talking about and can maybe even re-build your old speaker with a stronger voice coil. :-\
