My quick guestimate says Its normally the ones that dont have the chops that are against
And never have I seen music mentioned in those vids ..
Let someone be brave and post a you tube vid of yourself playing 2 notes with a tone bend and see how many hits you get...

I don't think it's that at all. Chops and soul or music or feel or whatever you want to call it are not mutually exclusive, but chops are no guarantee either, and when the sole object is to show off your chops then that's what you generally get - a display of chops and not much else.

I also second the points about the sound and gear many of these guys have. All that compression kills any dynamics in the music, assuming the player has any interest in dynamics in the first place. For me shred started with Al di Meola, but whilst he had a lot of speed and chops he had dynamics as well, all in his right hand and very controlled.

PS: I'm not saying di Meola set out to start the world shredding. Musicians can't always help what comes from the ideas they put forward. Joni Mitchell once said that you come up with a great idea and get it down on record and it's like your kid that you've nurtured and sent out into the world, and then a couple of years later it comes back, only it's lost it's manners and started smoking and cussing and you can barely recognise it.

Fair enough - it's presented as a technical challenge and not music. The same drive that other people have to get in the record books (i.e. the musical equivalent of putting a ferret down your trousers). I think the whole point detractors have boils down to: music isn't a competitive sport, but these comps are.

To me, it just seems a bit of a waste - all the time and effort spent to get to those advanced levels of meaninglessness could have been spent on other, more meaningful areas of making music. These guys have put all their time and dedication into reaching these levels when they could have become better all-round players.

...and no, I couldn't do it, but how many could? If only players at this level could appreciate it, that would be a dozen people worldwide. I can't play Rollo Interior yet either, and that doesn't stop me from appreciating it.
