Following on that other superb thread with the horror stories at gigs , was just wondering about the stories where you been fired and why?
Cheers

Not exactly fired... was at the Lanzerac in Stellenbosch in my 1-man-band days (Roland keys, guitar, vocals) where the manager told me to stop playing pop...OR.... and do only jazzy stuff (Mack the Knife, Take 5 , etc etc...)....which was fine 'cause I just improvised and improvised...have you ever heard Under the Boardwalk done bossa nova...? ...well it satisfied at least a few patrons ?

Also not exactly fired.. just a bad gig..
We played a festival (not going to mentioned names), the organizers sent us the line up for the bands. We were 2nd last (out of 6 or 7 bands), so we arrived a bit late (halfway into the 1st bands slot) since we had a few km's to drive..
When we arrived, the organizers told us we had lost our slot, since we are 30mins late. But we were never informed that we actually opened the show, there was another band (the band to play last) that also lost their slot due to miscommunication. After me almost knocking one of the organizers and a lot of fighting >☹ , they gave us a 20min or so slot time to jam a few songs. However, the organizers never apologized or admitted they made a mistake, since IMO it's their responsibility to inform you correctly.
Well so you learn..now I double check every gig to prevent it from happening again. :?

unless there's "groot" drama , which is what i think icecream man is refering to ? , and hoping for some juicy stories , ussually most pro muso's do contracts............ and move off after they expire...... and the venue makes a change...........
so seldom any drama involved....... as most muso's today are far too well behaved and bussiness oriented to "blow off" a paying gig by doing something foolish .........
which is in the true tradition of 'rock and roll" ......... and maybe thats why many bands have lost their edge....... cos it's no longer just about the music and having a good time........but about about making the money and the right impressions ........
sad sad sad that rock and roll has come to this ........
as a UK celebrity so adequitely put it .........'it used to be all about Rock and Roll, and now it's just C*ck and Dole "

Always negotiated shows before hand..... but we played Potchestrom (racism HQ) for their Aardklop Festival. We were on the lineup at about 7pm after a local Afrikaanse Rock band.
We played in about 3 songs, and quickly noticed that people were not digging the sound of the show, probably as we were SUPER loud. We had one guy giving great stress to the sound man (whom we had instructed to not turn us down) about how it was to loud and he could not watch the rugby.
We then had an organiser say we should end it off in 2 songs.... thus shorten the set.... So we decided to play the longest last song we could... jamming for about 20minutes.... and then feedbacking and lollygagging for baout another 5 minutes..... And at that point we had turned up even more, and piled our instruments up in a pile at the front othe stage.
It really pissed people off, and had a super negative effect on the whole night for us, but it was 100% worth it ?
I expect that is the closest to being fired we have come..... ut they still paid us thanks to a contract.

We also had a gig at Aardklop, 3 songs into our set the promoter comes up and instructs us to finish because the headline act has to sound check. We obliged. The Headline act only arrived an hour later, faffed around for an unreasonably long time, sound checked for an hour, and plaid a 2 hour set, knocking a whole bunch of other acts back. Turns our he had 'signed' this band and had arranged the whole thing as a launch for them. Last I heard they had split.

Sounds about right..... I must say I had a great deal of fun at that festival though....
For all the wrong reasons ?

I was not exactly kick off a gig …… here’s long short story:
I was gigging in London in 1995, one Friday after a long lunch and many shooters, I scurried back to the hotel with barley enough time grab my guitar case, as the lift opened downstairs on to the lobby, this short noisy Brit met me and said something like “ where have you been we’re running late” and took my guitar and handed it to a limo driver who helped us into the car.
A short while later we ended up at Wembley Stadium, there were thousands of people milling around, and loud music coming from inside. Any rate as the band got together in a circle, arms interlocked before going on .. … … Mic staired at me for a while and said “Who the fook are you then mate” … and that was it ........
