I going to ignore the lady above. No I'm not.
But this BMI thing must be nonsense, my BMI is 20.5 and I'm actually about 3-4kgs overweight :?
Now scrolling up again.
Edit: I'm just going to ignore Singe's hip/waist request. A man with a 30 inch waist and 30 inch hips requesting that is just bragging heroin chic.

29.7 ???
No man should ever have to measure or report his hip/waist ratio ... ever ?

so i'm 0.1 overweight......... damn i knew i shouldna had that pizza, ?
.anyway who decides what ideal is......... definitely not the fashion industry , ideal would be way overweight if one wanted to work as a model or actress or in fact to front most bands ... i saw lettermans interview with lady ga ga and well she was in nothing more than a jacket and nickers and boots and she must be way below ideal BMI , as all pop stars need to be

These "ideals" don't refer to aesthetics. They refer to health outcomes. A few of those super-thin models and actresses full under the "ideal" range. Because negative health outcomes have been correlated with those very low BMI levels.
So what they're saying is that having a BMI of 30 isn't "wrong," it just makes it more likely (not certain) that you will suffer negative health outcomes as a result (risks for diabetes and heart disease increase for example, as compared with those in the "ideal" category).
But as I said earlier, it's been found not to be the strongest predictor of many negative outcomes. Belly size, however, is strongly associated with heart disease - which is why there is a movement towards waist/hip ratio. Someone who's generally evenly proportioned therefore, may be at less risk than someone with a boep, even if they weigh more.
But you're right to bring this up, Keira, because both the public and the medical fraternity are not easily able to untangle all of the huge cultural issues around weight and size. Furthermore, the easy statements about ideal body characteristics for health ignore the fact that some people are in a way better position to change those characteristics than others (people who slave in a factory all day, for example, may be much less inclined to go jogging after work than someone who works in an organic tea room and gets home refreshed and with a healthy bank balance), and thus you get people feeling guilty, without providing solutions to their weight issues.
Kind of like telling someone they have an incurable disease. It depresses them, but you can't do anything for them.

HAHAHA, I read, "wouldn't mind measuring ez's though". I thought, WOW that is bold of you Squonk!
I heard this BMI thing is outdated nonsense, but I guess we all love doing little surveys or whatever. I am oblivious to what I weigh though and have little inclination to start measuring myself, another survey please.
Norman86
actually, 22 is the perfect BMI... over 25 is considered overweight, under 19 is underweight...
Jinx
21.4 --> not exactly convinced on the accuracy of this considering I think I have put on weight ?

Ok. So I got the scoop with BMI yesterday.
Best evidence still makes it a really strong predictor of certain health outcomes. But saying that, belly girth is also very important. For example, a person with a BMI of 26 has about the same or less risk of heart disease if he has a waist under 88cm, than a leaner man - say 24 BMI - with a waist over 88cm. This is thought to be because fat in your belly is known to be highly inflammatory (i.e., causing you more damage than normal fat).
Furthermore, fitness counts for a lot. It is now known that it is possible to be fat and fit to some extent. So again, it turns out that someone with a BMI between 25 and 30 (overweight) who is fit, has about the same risk for a range of nasty outcomes than a lean but utterly sedentary person.
Best position would be to shoot for a BMI under 25, with a waist under 88cm and get plenty of exercise. Course, that guarantees nothing ? That kind of person is also quite likely to die from say, a heart attack, it's just that they're less likely than pretty much anyone heavier, wider at the waist, or more sedentary. Oh yeah. You also need to be a non-smoker, a moderate drinker, and don't take in too many trans-fats. So fun is pretty much out of the question. ?
(well, not really, but I guess the more of these risks you have going on the more it's going to seem that way)
Just to say one more thing. Not everyone finds it as easy to change. Turns out if all your friends eat nothing but salad, run the comrades every year, look at you like you're a hobo in the gutter if you have more than 2 beers in one day, and pull disgusted faces whenever they smell a whiff of cigarette smoke... well, it turns out changing isn't going to be that hard.
But those aren't my friends and they're not many people's. Your context affects how easy it is to achieve these ideals that your doctor tells you about.

But you'll have lots of blues to sing

Said that runner's high is the only high I get
Ain't got no burgers, no beer
Ain't got no cigarettes."

Hey Squonk I bet if you turn sideways you disappear.
Forget BMI , try strap length as a measure. I used to wear my guitar down near my knees. As I grew into my body I shorted my strap so that my guitar wouldn't go the same way as my feet and other parts of my anatomy and disappear from view. I now wear my guitar at about belly high but as I continue to grow into my body my guitar seems to be growing further away from me. If the current trend continues I will, in the not too distant future, have to shorten my strap once again to above my belly, at which point I will need to convert to a sort of standing version of lap-steel style of playing.

I always thought the "B" in BMI stood for "boep".
Sigh....
