LOL........you are right on it....... RepRap is a free desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap can print those parts, RepRap is a self-replicating machine - one that anyone can build given time and materials. It also means that - if you've got a RepRap - you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend...
RepRap is about making self-replicating machines, and making them freely available for the benefit of everyone. We are using 3D printing to do this, but if you have other technologies that can copy themselves and that can be made freely available to all, then this is the place for you too.

What I totally do not get is how it "sees" the inner workings.......for example with that Crescent wrench.....how does it see the machining of the worm screw...the adjuster....both the part that turns and the corresponding gears in the movable jaw? I get that whatever the scanner can see it can replicate....but what about what it cannot see? How does it see the tolerances, the design and actual machining of the keyway, the shape and fit of the keyway to the moveable jaw and whatever the "stop" is that prevents the moveable jaw from dropping out of the integral jaw at full wide open?

I understand they scan it but how does the scanner see the inner mechanisms? How does it print the flipping lanyard ring so it ends up fitted through the hole in the handle? It's mind boggling! ?

There has to be more to this than just passing a scanner over something and then printing the damn thing?

I think it's a hoax based on a stretched truth.

You do get 3D printers which build up plastic layer by layer; but, as you point out, it's not possible to "scan" the inner workings of an object with an external laser scanner.
I think the real give-away was when they colour coded the windy bit red ... and it showed red parts as part of the inner workings.

the gears from the wrench(4 gears) looks nothing the gears on the 3d wrench(3 gears)

so yes they might be able to scan the shape, but the inside cant be scanned, they have to redo that part on the computer

EDIT: but its still impressive to be able to print something exactly like its on the pc.

Yes and also the original Crescent wrench had the typical large hole for a lanyard or wrist strap whereas the "printed" one has the metal ring somehow assembled by a printer through the small hole.

No...... I reckon they can disassemble this, scan it and print the parts out......but then they will need to be assembled. No way in my mind can everything be printed in situ.
