So I've finally got some time to do a bit of work on my 98' Korean Squier Strat (thanks singe ?). I've put on some vintage Kluson button style tuners, an ostrich bone nut (just for you Bob ?) and Mex Strat pickups (thanks IceCreamMan ?). The nut sounds fine to me, but I don't have the "golden ears" so what would I know :-[. The Mex Strat pickups make a massive difference.. No more too-bright-thin-and-lifeless tone, but the characteristic Strat quack instead. I don't think I'll look too far to find upper echelon replacements, these sound fantastic and I'm more than happy with them.
Now I'm busy substituting the horrible minimalist Squier trem block with a proper full volume Fender Strat block (thanks chris77 ?), as well as swapping the bridge plate and saddles for a Fender spaced plate and a set of roller saddles (to help ease the going-out-of-tune-when-played-with-a-trem-bar characteristic that most Squier Strats seem to posses). This constitutes plugging the holes from the Squier trem and drilling new ones for the Fender one, as unforchos they're spaced differently.
I took the neck off to do this so I wouldn't have to restring, and also to have a look at the body composition. I couldn't help but notice an interesting phenomenon. There is a strange hole that's been roughed through the neck pocket (I say roughed, because there's no chance this fellow used a drill bit to do this..)
Any ideas what its there for?
The dog seemed pretty chill..
But I'm the hell in >☹ Why would somebody make a horrible hole like that? Goes right through to the other side.. The neck pocket is quite a vital part of the guitar is it not? Is there a chance that this hole could have a negative effect of some sort?
Anyway, there was a rather pleasant flip side, I sanded off a little of the overspray on the neck pocket, and I was pleased to find that the body isn't ply ?.
Having another look around the pocket and the pickup cavity, I also discovered that its a 1 piece body which is great news. Could anyone hazard a guess at what wood's been used? Its definitely too heavy for basswood, this guitar weighs a ton compared to my mates Squier Bullet Strat (which is basswood). Its fairly light coloured, would I be too optimistic to assume its Ash?
Lastly but not leastly, I would like to thank all of those generous people that have helped me out. The majority of the members of this forum are truly amazing and I'm honoured to share this community with you.
