Thanks to Ronnie at Allbang and Strummit in JHB I got my paws on a 1975 pre-lawsuit Ibanez Jazz Bass. I haven't gotten around to a photo shoot yet but the brown bomber had its first practice on Tuesday night and first gig last night. I am a happy man! The pots need cleaning and I had to do a little maintenance here and there (replaced the bridge cover and thumbrest (positioned below the strings so it's actually the less than useful finger "pull"), thanks to Chad Adam Browne for sourcing them for me!) but all round this is a brilliant guitar... tone, clarity, thump and growl all there in spades. It's comfortable on stage (a little heavy but the neck is perfect and it's well balanced)... mahogany core with ash top and back, maple neck. I put 45-105 Rotosound Swings on it. I'll post pics but in the meantime here's the the catalogue pic (2376B) middle row far right:

I find playing ordinary scale bass way too painful. Poor technique should probably not be ruled out either
