So after playing around with multi effects a little, reading up on all the advice etc as well I have decided to go the Direct to PA route with pedals and pedal board.
I thought it would be a great idea to see what fellow GFSA members favorite pedals were in the following (and why if possible):
1) OD
2) Delay (not a looper)
3) Reverb
4) Volume pedal
5) Wah Pedal
6) Compressor
7) Distortion (possibly not really necessary for me)
8) EQ
While this will be built up slowly I would appreciate suggestions that I can start the research and journey of discovery on.

I honestly think you'll be better suiter to one of the Pod HD pedals if you're heading directly into a P.A. Then at least you have some kind of amp emulation.
In terms of OD, I always like to pick mineto suit what amp I am using. My favorite 2 currently would a plain old TS9, or an M I Audio Tube Zone.
Delay - Nova Repeater (or Nova Delay if you want more tweakies)
Reverb - That one Brent recently sold would have been first place, but I can't help but recommend the Nova Reverb here too!
Volume - Visual Sound's Visual Volume.
Wah - I'd try find something odd or quirky, have a bit of a different signature sound than the usual crybaby.
Compressor - do you really need one? I keep buying them, then selling them cause I dont need em!
Distortion - Not much experience here. I use a Ht Dist-X for over the top brutals.
Eq - MXR one, or a modded Boss GE7.

Thx Mike, and I hear you about the POD HD but I am going to try a Tech 21 Character series Blonde pedal rather as I really don't need many amp sims.
I was looking at the HD300 but am now unimpressed with the groupng of essential effects in the same "bank" or blocks where only one can be used from each block.
I use compressor quite a bit as in a P&W environment (with acoustic as well) with a Tele.
MikeM
Ah, great then you'd need one.
How is their a dynamic response though? That's the thing imo.. Solid state never takes pedals like a tube, and that's what I'd try to find in a emulator of sorts ?
BluJu
I'm not sure about this. But what about those boss fender stomp boxes if you still want to go the single effects route? I haven't tried one or read to much into it but you get those
bassman or twin reverb emulater things in one normal size stomp box.

Mike, I am also looking at the AMT pre-amp pedals - the F1 or the SS10 Tube pre-amp.
Man, I didn't realise there's a whole HUGE world out there when one starts looking at pedals. Spent most of the afternoon browsing the web while looking at MotoGP and TdF! ? ? (who says men can't multi-task!!?) ?
MikeM
Yea man!! Imo it's overwhelming, and many people make it a bigger deal than it should be.
Find something that you like, in time you will make it work no matter what and it'll add to the signature of your sound.
If you can get a tube preamp for a reasonable pricem that'd really be the answer!!

I'm doing the same and am halfway to where I want to be already. In order, effects will be:
1. Tuner - Korg Pitch Black
2. Compressor - Rothwell Love Squeeze - I like transparent compression and this is arguably the best
3. Overdrive - Barber LTD - Low to medium gain with a subtle mid hump.
4. Univibe - Lovepedal Magicboy Vibe - I love this pedal, just the right amount of intensity..
5. Amp sim - Tech 21 Blonde - I might add in a Liverpool too for drive with an A/B looper to switch between the two.
6. Volume Pedal - Boss FV-500L - solid and reliable
7. Rotary - Strymon Lex - The best rotary sim available IMO
8. Delay - Eventide Time Factor - Until the TimeLine comes out this is it for digital delay. True stereo too, which is a deciding factor
9. Reverb - Strymon Blue Sky - True stereo and shimmer mode were the deciding factors here
The AMTs are interesting, but the F1 only gets clean tones and the SS-10 has no speaker sim AFAIK

My little worth agrees totally with what Mike's saying. As to what pedals... I don't really have experience with going DI, but since you are not using a amp with valves to drive, I woul rather look at something different than the TS and TubeZone. I don't know really but that's what my logic is telling me (very humble logic). My feeling says that a more tweakable overdrive like those line 6 ds4 (I think, its the golden one) or the boss od20... Something similar...
But just for interest sake, I would also suggest the line6 hds for p&w... Works real well and there are patches online with preset setting with nice p&w tones. See

Hey Jacques, I am not that keen on the multieffect units but will stillhave a good look soon.
I know this guy uses the M13 but I have also had suggestions of the M9 with a Character series pedaland volume pedal as well - an interesting concept. Check out their seperate room and Amp cupboards!

@Alan - I just checked and you are correct - no speaker sim. So I will be checking out the Character series sson.

Bear in mind , 'boutique' pedals are very expensive , especially most of those already mentioned above.
In your case the Line 6 HD 500 may in fact be a better option for your needs , from what I've read in your posts .
PS...I know TokaiSA has one , he loves it , maybe you can hook up with him and he could demo it for you personally, before you go the stomp route...
........just sayin' :-[
Thx - will continue to check out the options (although the boutique pedals are far cooler ? ?)

Many of them are just better marketted, usually having a run-of-the mill circut with a few tweaks. Obviously loads not, just be aware that more money doesn't necessarily mean better.

Yip, thx Mike.
Although I am still a huge fan of this (I don't know if Matt ever built another one for anyone else but it is great IMO:

I've got a friend's HD500 here to try fix (he broke the data entry dial after our first gig with it) and I programmed in some basic amp/FX patches for him before the gig. So on top of having the 300 for a month for review, So I know them well and strongly considered getting one myself for DI purposes.
Ultimately though, I want to keep and use the pedals I already have (and plan on adding to) to get the best of each effect, so a simple amp emulator pedal makes sense. Plus it means I can reconfigure the board for different gigs and still use it easily with my amp. Plus it's easy to upgrade/change any pedal as budget/tastes change. Add in a programmable loop switcher and sync time based pedals with MTC and you end up with the best of all worlds - tone, flexibility and ease of use while playing.
I did find myself wishing that Line 6 would do a modern HD version of the AM4, with just amp and speaker models - the HD models are nice. My Tech 21 Blonde is waiting at customs, so I should have it by the end of next week to compare.
I have to say though - I haven't heard a really good standalone VOX emulator yet. I want to try the Tech 21 Liverpool, but the clips I've heard aren't quite what I hoped/expected. Might be better in the flesh...

Strangely I was doing the exact same thing! ?

I use a Tech 21 Liverpool for gigs and in a P&W environment. I go through my pedals into the Liverpool and a Radial JDI into the PA. I really like it. There's quite a bit of very recent discussion on it in this thread:

It is better in the flesh. 8) On cleans at least...

Sorry, but what is a univibe, and what does it actually do / used for?

It's a modulation (things that go "whoosh"!) pedal. Originally designed as a poor man's Leslie speaker replacement, it has elements of chorus, vibrato and phase all in one, so has a really rich, thick sound that works well clean or up front of a distorted amp or drive pedal. Hendrix, Robin Trower, David Gilmour and Roger Mayer all use them extensively.

1) OD - All of the Xotic Pedals, the EP, RC, BB Custom Shop. My favorites I also have the Swart Atomic Boost, all epic, all different, hard to choose ONE OD imo.
2) Delay - Empress Superdelay
3) Reverb - Neunaber Wet
4) Volume pedal - Hilton Volume Pedal
5) Wah Pedal - Wah Probe (Its fun and one of the best sounding wahs)
6) Compressor - Rothwell Lovesqueeze (Most transparent compressor out there, kla)
7) Distortion (what is this?) ?

Don't go the digital route... You'll one day just end up with analogue gear, and think to yourself: "What an idiot I was"...
