After watching "Hotel Rwanda" I have a different mindset about bribery.
I'm not a fan of it though but if my (or my family's) life or freedom is dependent on me doing something untoward then I'll do it.
Well there's different degrees of this malarkey.
The incident that I referred to earlier (I'm not giving too many details, legal advice and all that) was to "facilitate" solving a problem which legitimately was not mine and which would not have stood had the matter gone to court. This is comparable for having to pay for something that's already mine by right.
Then there are "favours". I can help you get this thing that you don't have (building permission, business deal, driver's license) or make some inconvenient thing (traffic ticket, bad debt) go away if you give me a certain sum of money. This is the really damaging one IMO.
I'd hardly call paying somebody to preserve your life "bribery". A protection racket maybe. No court would convict you, and we shouldn't treat all instances of money changing hands in the same light.
