When I go to see a rock band live, I dont want them to sound like the cd.
The cd has been layered, polished and gone over a hundred times, which is great, but when I see them live I want to see the other version, the live version, just the 3,4 or 5 of them doing their thing in the flesh.

Yup, and I like to change things deliberately so that it's not what it is on the CD, i'll add little jam parts or link songs or change bits of vocal melodies etc.

I remember they also made Muse do that on some Italian TV show, so they all swapped instruments and looked like complete fools. xD
But yeah. To an extent, don't we guitarists use a good number of electronic devices to give us an edge on stage? Loopers, Wah-Wah Pedals, Distortion Pedals, Echo and Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Octave splitters etc.
I know it's different, but fundamentally, it's the same, isn't it?
I don't condone faking a performance. I know tons of under-rated bands that would be ecstatic to play in front of a large crowd and play sincerely, but I guess that that's just how showbiz is nowadays.
I'm going into Sound Engineering as my field of study and I'm dreading the thought of how often I will have to deal with people that want me to quantize and auto-tune the hell outta their recordings. :/
In studio, it's okay, I guess. But on stage, there should be no excuse for pitch correction.
If you can't play it, then don't.
I'd be embarrassed to get on stage and not be able to play my instrument.

No, it's not at all fundamentally the same, we use those devices to change our tone, they do not change the notes we play or how we play them nor do they play the notes correct if we play them wrong or play them when we don't play them.

You will always autotune in the studio, even if they don't ask you to. If you work for yourself and you hear the vocalist is just always flat you don't want your work to sound crap. If the band sucks your work sucks. If you want more work you want your recordings to sound good. It's business. I had (still have but don't work commercially anymore because of these issues, bands that suck, musos who crack attitude etc. It's soul destroying and intensive hours) a recording studio for years and I learned the hard way.
