That's a function of Antonioni's style... the whole movie sets up actors and extra's in extremes... the photographer goes from slowly wandering around his studio to hectic bouncing off the walls and back. I couldn't figure out Vanessa Redgrave's odd performance either until this clip:
In the end scene a truckload of mimes drives into a park screaming and shouting and then stop to play a silent, slow game of mime tennis ?
