Another factor: as you become more experienced, you tend to apply exactly the right amount of pressure to a string as is needed. Early on, especially when holding chords, there's a tendency to grip the hell of the neck, which doesn't help your fingertips. You can help this process along by practicing applying just the right amount of pressure to fret the note.
