Guitar Theory

tubby

I have been playing for about 6 years now. Technically i have improved leaps and bounds over the last year or so. Im sweep picking and im learning legato. Problem is im still completely useless with theory. I barely know beginner theory ? Every thing i play is by ear and when i write songs its very much a trial and error process. So i have finally decided now is the time to brush up on my theory. What would be the best place to start considering my limited knowledge?

Find a good teacher - it's not just learning theory, but the order you learn concepts in and having someone to explain it logically.
I am based in S Suburbs, CT if u keen.

Start with basic chord theory, then natural modes and how to use them. then start looking at your favourite songs (say a Killswitch track) and work out what's going on with the chords and scales that are used in it.

Hey there,

Good post. You're honest. +1 with VV and Guy.

Step 1, IMO, learn the notes on the fretboard and to identify them. If you train your ear to the tonalities, thats a plus.
Step 2, you probably know the major scale and its modes. Learn their applications and how to spell them (i.e their formulae)
Step 3, alongside step 2, i would suggest working on chordal knowledge as well. No offence but a lot of people overlook this because they want to sweep and tap from the get go.
I'll e-mail you some theory stuff in a bit.

May the force be with you. ?

the man has done written some good stuff there, very helpful, memorize them formulae ?

Im based in PE. There are some pretty good teachers here. I know a couple names. I would like to teach myself a little before i go for lessons though (hopefully this will help me save time and money). Ill go through some of your lessons (posted on the lessons board).
