Don't fall into the trap! Effects are sooo much less important than guitar and amp! Please don't think you need effects in the first place, electric guitar is about electric guitar :-\

I know you're not looking for singlepedal vs multieffect advice, but here it is with a hint of relevance to your question at the end.
If I were you I'd buy effects stand alone 2nd hand and 1 at a time and get all you can out of one before deciding if its a keeper or not and then moving on to the next.
-you don't get bogged down with complicated electronics and programs
-you won't be buying something that you may struggle to sell
-you won't have to spend a whole whack of cash at a go
That way you get to try a lot of things, and build up a collection of things you like. Ultimately, theres a good chance that you'll end up going the single-effect route, why not start now? Another recommendation is to try and build a few from the info there is online. I mean considering you built your little amp and all.. should be chilled. Obviously there are some that you can't build easily like reverbs, delays, wahs etc, but for those, there's mastercard ?
Finally, if you must get a multi-effect I would go for the Boss ME-50/70 or a Vox Tonelab SE/LE, depending on how much you have to spend. And remember, second-hand.
Good luck with the decision ?
