I'm trying to refinish an old Ibanez RG570 that I got. It has a very dull red colour and a few cracks that I would like to fix.
I've been doing some research and found that Nitro Cellulose Based lacquer or Polyurethane would be the ideal paint to use but I haven't been able to find either.
does anyone know where I can find it or if there is any other paint which I can substitute? Guitar is Basswood.

I think best would be to go to a hardware shop and look at some of the paint's labels. They should say what hind of paint it is.

I've been to Brights, Midas, Spiros and Mica. All of them have the same kind of Paint SPRAYON and another brand.
Only Builders Warehouse had Polyurathane but not the colour I was looking for.
I'm gonna try House of paint tomorrow but if anyone knows where I can find something please let me know.

I doubt that you will find the exact colour you are looking for. I'd say your best bet would be to go to an automotive paint shop and have them mix it.

If all else fails I will go there. Duraline has Polyutharane Enamel paint so might give that a try cos I'm testing 1st on my Cort X-6.
Have already sanded it and put Sand Sealer now comes the Primer but until I don't have the paint I can't move forward so pointless to start with the Ibanez.

Just a thought but maybe find guys that do repairs to piano's? maybe they can give you stuff or head you in the right direction.

Good advice to try an auto paint shop, you'll find one in most cities in SA. They should be able to supply you with a mixed colour of your choice in nitrocellulose (also known as Duco in the industry) or you could opt for the more modern 2K two part paint system. The advantage of 2K is that it gives better clarity, is harder wearing, the pigments used are more stable and won't fade as easily over time and unlike nitro paints, won't crack, craze or turn tacky after a few years. The only draw back is that you'll need access to a compressor and spray gun. I hope this helps.

You could try Chemspec products, we do a lot of wood working and finishing with there cata based products, lacquer and a catalist to speed the drying process, they can tint a clear gloss lacquer with the colour that you need.
My local supplier in either atturbury in pretoria or boxburg in jhb is The House of Paint they often mixed custom colors for me, just take the body in and they should be able to do a match.

I have to vouch for automotive 2K as well. They can mix pretty much any colour and I had mine done many years ago and it's as tough as nails. Some people don't like it though as it takes a LOT of effort to age it because it's so hardcore.

You want polyurethane for a basswood body - it offers better protection than nitrocellulose or acrylic (although acrylic will do in a pinch). The catalyzed (twin pack) stuff is real hard, but a bit of a pain to use for a smaller job like a guitar (plus is spray gun only).
FYI: Dupont stopped making the nitro Duco paint in the late 60s. ICI now own the brand name, and have reintroduced it for their acrylic range, so the Duco paint you get now is nothing like the original Duco.
Plascon were the only guys locally making a nitro finish (WL6 clear only), but have apparently stopped making it - and the last batch I got from them I had endless problems with.

Ok yeah I have been looking around and Ibanez guitars are mainly painted with PolyUrethane as opposed to Gibson's and Fender's which are painted with Nitro.
I saw Polyurethane at builders warehouse but not sure if they had the right colour. I will go have a look today or tomorrow see if I can find it. I'm looking for red, white and black.
Thank you for all the info, this forum is amazing!

Hi Guys so I've decided that I will go with Polyurethane paint as its more easily available and I'm pretty certain that my guitar has already a Urethane finish, definitely not lacquer as my Fender.
However regarding the clear gloss must it also be urethane? I'm currently looking at Rust Oleum clear gloss which doesn't really say if it's Lacquer or Urethane. Would it make a difference?

all the guitars I've ever painted I've done with automotive paints. you can use a normal 2K system, then you dont need a clearcoat, or use a basecoat system and then you require a 2K clearcoat on top of that. If you decide to do any kind of special graphix or something on top of your primary colour, needles to say you then need to finish with a top coat of clear. hope this helps
