Has anyone ever heard this type of guitar sound before? Any ideas as to how the lead is getting this sound?
(hope you can find it in you to sit through the crappy vocals)
Is it possible that he's putting his signal through an actual synthesizer? If so, how would one do that?

Just a pitch shifter with delay/'verb (or delay/'verb with pitch shift ?). Could be an Electroharmonix HOG (which is basically a pitch shifter), but they usually sound a bit grungier. Done properly, it can be very nice (take a listen to the Strymon Blue Sky reverb in "Shimmer" mode).

BTW - you can control synths with a guitar. I do it all the time. ? You need a hexaphonic pickup, a guitar to MIDI converter and a synth. Often the last two are in the same box (e.g. Roland GR-20 or GR-55).

Thanks Alan.
