I also rate Schalk Joubert very highly. Even posted a few clips on page 3 of this thread some time ago.
Speaking of the SA bassists, I really enjoyed what Ian Cohen was doing with Bright Blue back in the day. If not in terms of chops then definitely in terms of a 'vibe' that cuts through those recordings circa the Rising Tide album. Incredibly cool SA sound IMHO. And don't forget Yoyo Buys (The Usual et al). Astonishing bass player.
I also enjoyed Gito Baloi (Tananas), and think that Sipho Gumede may be one of the most criminally underrated musicians to ever be born in these parts.

I can't remember if we've mentioned him before in this thread, but another bassist who tends to get overlooked because of his bandmates is John Deacon of Queen.

ABSOLUTELY. I have definitely mentioned him in this thread somewhere. He's just not an 'exciting' character, and probably didn't get enough recognition due to that. He played with one of the greatest bands of all time, so I doubt he has any regrets. Listen to some of his work on songs like Don't stop me now, or the awesome little fills he does in The Show Must Go On.

Ok, i just read through 6 pages of this thread and didn't see Steve Bailey at all.
What about Gary Willis? I don't know much of his stuff but he has the sweetest signature bass of them all.

My favourite is Geezer Butler. Not only does he play bass pretty well, but he has also written over 95% of Black Sabbath's songs. And written them well, may I add.
