Billy F Gibbons Stuff

Firstly you need to watch: Few notes from the video: 1) He uses 7s! 8s for him is heavy 2) Chambered Les Pauls, some guitars have their necks chambered 3) All guitars are EQ'd to sound like Pearly, Teles, BillyBo's etc 4) Marshall JMP-1's, no Plexis in sight Billy with an SG in what is apparently the bands studio His live gear as seen in the Youtube video, live setup with mirrored back up gear. ???

I don't get the bit about EQing all the guitars so they sound the same. The roadie said something like "if he plays a telecaster we don't want you to know he's playing a telecaster." What's that about? Why have all these different guitars and then try and make them sound the same?

Norman86 wrote Holy crap....
there are probably more guitars between Billy and Keef than there are in SA!! ?

okay, maybe not... but damn... easily 900 guitars that he owns... If not more! Madness i tell you!!

The roadie made a comment about "I take lots of empty cases with me". I know Keef gets given a lot of guitars and I suspect the same happens with other "guitar gods". Keef seems to have a few guitars that he really cares about but generally more than he knows what to do with or even can recognise. Every town he goes to there's some luthier wanting to give him a guitar - because then there's a shot of Keef with the guitar and that's publicity. If Keef uses the thing on stage then that's a lot of publicity.

BTW - Blue Jean Blues is one of my all-time favourite songs. Awesome guitar playing in that one.

The song that got me into blues, I was a hectic prog rocker at the time, and Gibbons tasteful playing made me break out in goosebumps.
One of my favourite songs as well 8)

I suspect they're props. Part of the look of ZZ top is the variety of guitars that BG plays. So he wants them all to sound like his old Les Paul, but he doesn't want to be stuck only using a Les Paul.

Wow Alan. Sorry I didn't realise , that's an impressive collection. :yup: With all my favourites. ?

Found ZZ Top live in Texas @ musica for R40! Good place to start from!

Well, apparently the Reverend bought 7 Retroking 18's recently for use on a new album. Going back to his roots apparently. 18 Watts FTW!

Reinhard

If anyone wants the first 6 albums, send me a pm.

I'm still pissed I didn't see them when they played here at the Jazz Festival.

I got told by a friend that there is some biker festival on in December and that ZZ Top is rumoured to be playing.

Reinhard

Just been reading through "101 Star Guitars" that I got for me bday with the foreword by The BFG himself. Used to jam a few ZZ tunes in the cover band I was in a good few years ago aswell. Lekker stuff although I play with thicker strings ? I would so destroy 7's!!!

That's an INSANE rig he's got going there!!!

Reinhard - I'm there like a bear dude!!! ?

When are okes jamming again? I must make a turn to come check you out!!

Jesus Just Left Chicago on the Crossroads 2010 dvd is AWESOME. Their playing is deceptive... seems like simple classic riffs but the rhythms are hard to nail down and make them swing like the boys do. Plus that unison onstage shuffle is something we've been practicing ?
