A couple of years ago I did quite a bit of work with medical aids. It's more complex than you think.
Medical aids do tend to drive costs down - for their members and on things like charges for theatre time, days in a ward and so on.
I've a pretty good idea how complex it is in that there medicla aid wilderness..
agreed, that it is a large part of the medical aid trying to push their own toothpaste back into the tube...
and i think they have acknowledged that, but like you said, they are doing a lot more "good" in trying to get costs down..
and using its own members to do so as a last resort..
but, like i said, we are all still to quick to blame the medical aid for NOT paying a certain bill, when we should rather be complaining towards the health care provider for charging something stupid...
or, like the examples you use - totally abusing the system by removing the same tooth a number of times.
2 weeks ago or so, my medical aid was billed by a hospital for almost R1,500 for the 6 hours I spent waiting in their ward for NOTHING... i walked in at 12noon and walked out again at 6pm, without so much as a glass of water from them.. and they billed my M.A. for it... and i didn;t even get to see a nurse or a doctor.
