As Kurt Cobain once sang, "I'd rather be dead than cool." Ironically, this was one of numerous contributing factors that made him the coolest man on the planet in 1991. And yet there's a fine line between the dangerous allure of true outsider cool and just being, y' know, popular.

Of course, cool is both a received and subjective notion, and by attempting to be arbiters of cool, we're in danger of getting sucked into Top Gear Cool Wall territory. "You're telling me that car is cool? In that shirt?!"

Nevertheless, safe in the knowledge that our shirt is considerably less catastrophic than Clarkson's, here is our unapologetic rundown of what MusicRadar considers to be the 10 coolest guitars in the world today.

As far as possible, we've stuck to current production models, and the pricing ranges from the affordable to the downright terrifying.

I'd have some Strandbergs, Blackmachines and Bernie Rico ERG's on there. Y'know, good traditional innovation and forward thinking as opposed to fashionable nostalgia. Maybe I'm old fashioned that way.

these things are so subjective, so i have no qualms about being subjective. in order, from 10 to 1, going on looks alone:

10 - the daylighter looks pretty cool, but in the top 10? and there's no bigsby-eqipped sg on this list?
9 - me likey.
8 - i can see the appeal, but only vaguely, and purely in a beach boys sense.
7 - not a big fan of the whole 12/6 concept, but i'll bite, just because of the song and the solos.
6 - yup. no argument.
5 - oh, hell no. completely impractical and just plain ugly.
4 - that's a better look, with some real patina too. dunno if it's for me, but if it was in a store, i might pull it down and plug it in.
3 - yowser. that's raised the bar somewhat...
2 - okay, i admit, maybe i just have something against these la cabronitas in general. flat, uninteresting, and sucky in the extreme.
1 - even before i read the blurb, the words 'to hell and back' came to mind. i'd fully respect that guitar in a robert rodriguez movie, and that says plenty right there.

like i said, it's subjective. for every guitarist - check that; guitar enthusiast - you'd find a different list. some might have the same guitars but in different places, some might have completely different guitars. one thing's fer sure; you'd have a heluva lot of heated debate. my list would have 10 guitars on it, sure, but to rank them would take some serious oysters on my part...

Hmmmm... that Bigsby LP looks familiar...
I'ma havta go with the Kauer. No offense to anyone with factory distressed guitars out there... 'cause they do look good... but surely it is the antithesis of cool?

When I was making my plans, the consensus I got on mylespaul from a fair few Bigsby LP owners was that the rolling bridge was a tone sucker.

Give me all of them ? I liked the look of the Les Paul with the Bigsby... But I'm seriously interested in that Danelectro Wild Thing... Think I need to check out some reviews on that ?

My metallic tastes aside, I am really diggin' Tele's. { The Steelcaster is beaut!}
And it seems that anything dressed in a Bigsby takes on a little attitude! ?

How functional are the Bigsby systems??? ???

I have an Aria hollow fitted with a Bigsby like tremolo, every time I touch the whammy it goes horribly out of tune. Could be the setup, but I remover the handle. I only use it for the shoegazer style feedback stuff.

I completely agree with you, those things are pretty much just all grandpa guitars...

They're just not...They go horrifically out of tune if you just look at them funny... ?
