Ok, where, on the Hard Rock timeline, did old school stop and the 'new' stuff begin? :?

I'll take a stab here and say with Nirvana.

Well... all these things are a continuum and the genres morph by degrees. If one MUST have a cut over point I'd think the very earliest would be Judas Priest.

It didn't. It's all relative.

Yes. Like Reggae didn't just pop up one day fully formed. It evolved from Ska and Rock Steady - and gradually.
Sometimes the artists morph as well. Marley really started off as a Ska singer before reggae was a recognised as a distinct genre.

For me , MEtallica is the start of the new school ...Old school started running in parralel with new school though so old school still going strong ...
make sense?

Seems reasonable. In metal, old school is chugging downstrokes. Triplet riffing and double bass is new school. And I'm *sure* someone's going to point out a counter example 'cos I really haven't thought this through very much.

Didn't it happen when some of them snorted, spiked, smoked or drank themselves to death...? ???

Old school = everything older than you
New school = everything younger than you
Hence, every person's definition of old school is different ?
Dingwall
I agree with deeftas, every generation would answer this question differently.
Personally I hate any kind of label in music (if I can help it) although I seem to very 'old school' these days as I tend to have never heard of the 'category' let alone the friggin band in question!!

It scares me to think that 40 years from now the occupants of retirement homes will be covered with tattoos and piercings and rap and house music will be golden oldies. ☹
Highway-Chile
Yeah, and do they have any idea now, how fugly those tat's and piercings are going to look at 80?
Squonk
There is no such thing. I think it's a term used in R&B, where the old school would belong to the older generation. More of a condascending term.
In rock this cant exist, I mean how far would you go back, Bill Haley? Even further, Robert Johnson?
Stay away from labels, unless it's Black Label ?

That's my quote of the month right there!
Jack-Flash-Jr
I think old school represents your personal affinity for an older style of hard rock placed into a newer context, and is completely subjective. Basically a term of endearment for a band/style rather than a classification. I call Suicidal Tendencies style skate thrash "old school" out of love and nostalgia when I hear it in a 00's metal context (which I might enjoy too).
I also think some artists/bands are beyond those kinds of labels for me because they sound as immediate today as they ever did.
singemonkey
Is QOTSA old school yet? If not, it soon will be.

Kyuss is old school.

IMO , Metallica is still old school , descent rock/metal. The new school stuff is all the newer subgenres of metal, including system of a down, Korn, Linkin Park and others(don't get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with the new school, but, its not as good as the old school).

I couldn't disagree with this statement more ? I find I way prefer where music is heading as opposed to where it's been, there's stuff out there that is absolutely breath taking these days - You've just gotta know where to look. Much like technology music evolves or should evolve, I've found I prefer hearing it in it's more "mature" stages.
