I'm curious as to why you commented about it being impractical for a life set-up. It's no more of a hassle to lug around two combo amps than it would be an amp-head with two cabs for instance, or are there other issues involved?
Well, bear in mind that most of us don't want to carry around a double-stack either. ? And the desire to avoid carrying heavy stuff grows exponentially as you get older.
It's a nice idea in theory, but when it comes to lugging gear after a gig when your tired it can get a bit much. Plus most places don't have the stage space, and if it's a larger stage and you have to mic up, that's another mic, cable and mixer channel as well as longer set-up, soundcheck and teardown time. When (not if) something goes wrong, it's more to troubleshoot too. All-in-all it's fine if you have roadies and sound engineers who are being paid to do it all day every day, but it's not something your average working muso is willing to put himself though.
Anyone who knows me knows I am not afraid of complexity, but in the heat of performance, KISS rules.
