The bass player in our worship band is really gifted. The guy can sing really well while playing the bass, the drums or the keyboard.
From experience, i can say that it is extremely difficult to sing and play trombone.

I've heard it said that is harder for a bassist to sing than a drummer. Sting in his autobiography admits that he had to dummy down his bass playing quite a bit when he was forced to sing. IMO Jack Bruce of The Cream is a legend because not only does he sing well but his bass work is killer. As for wind instruments Dizzy Gilespy and Charlie Parker managed to to do both. Both Roland Kirk and Ian Anderson managed to sing and play wind instruments at the same time as singing so hey anything is possible.

As someone mentioned before...

The role one performs on the instrument does add some interesting dynamic to this debate.

I just pondered on how difficult it must be (if not plain impossible) to improvise on any instrument along with singing, simultaneously, a la jazz.

Anyone out there claim they can scat while improvising on bass? I'd like to shake your hand ?

When I had piano lessons I felt that I should have been born a three-eyed chameleon (sp?), I just couldn't read the music, see what left and right hand were doing.

But now I come to think of it I've never seen a singing fiddle player, one that sings at the same time he's playing.

You get 'em. I've seen a couple in action - and good, professional players not hacks. Eliza Carthy and Bruce Molsky.

I think it must be frinkin hard to play lead guitar and sing...eg. Mikael Åkerfeldt, SRV, Hendrix etc. and then also Bass because it's rythm like mentioned above.

It all depends on the complexity of your playing and then singing [well] on top of that...no matter what instrument. [Obviously not instruments that you have to use your mouth... ?]

Ive tried them all. For me its a close between bass and drum. But more drums because its hard to keep you head at the mic while you got mad. And if you run out of breath, then well.....

Heck I dont know really because for me it's difficult to sing without trying to play anything. I've thought that maybe it's why some of the blues guys sort of break into a moaning humming in their songs. Anyway, singing anything more than a single verse and playing guitar at the same time is so awkward really like walking the whole front nine with your underpants on back to front.

It's easy between playing guitar and harmonica..
I used to do it when I learnt to play keyboard, no trouble..
It was tricky at first when I tried it with bass, but I'm fine with it now..
I struggle to play drums alone lol...... So I'd have to say drums..

I dont know but I imagine the drums, it would like of be like when you try to pat your head and rub your tummy at the same time ? and then youre (probably) sitting down and that makes it hard to sing well too
