I do weights before I play. and it helps a lot. Its so awesome feeling pumped and picking up the guitar and shredding. ?

Remember alcohol sends blood to your extremities (sp?). Maybe some port or sherry before hand. Also swinging arms like someone said also sends blood to the finger. To summarise: swing arms widly, wear gloves, sip some sherry and ignore the strange looks. It's probably the orange crocs and not the arm swing ?

And if a little sherry helps, I'm going to go right ahead and assume that a couple of shots of tequila must help lots. ?

? Bob you have the solution right there, your "better half" as you know knitted me some wool fingerless gloves a while back and wow they way better than any of the synthetic ones i have....and i use em every night here at sun city when i leave the flat for my venue (a 5 min walk ... in cold night air ) i wear the gloves and my hands actually really get warm.... so ask "M " to knit you a pair and being fingerless if i ever do a semi outdoor gig or one with an open door letting in freezing wind i actually play the whole gig wearing them and i'm warm as toast ?

Sorry to be pedantic here, folks, but the whole Saint Bernard-with-keg schpiel is a myth. Ethanol dicks with your body's temperature regulation, and has the opposite effect of 'warming' you up, despite how it makes your gullet glow.

A most important thing to remember is to keep your noggin warm, especially if you got a 'tosterone-dome. Your head loses a shedload of heat, and if your head is cold, your body will automatically limit circulation to your extremities.

Yeh they tested this on Mythbusters. To be honest, if I was gonna die in the snow I would rather have some alcohol with me to make the transition a little easier. What they found in the experiment was that the alcohol did send more blood to your extremities, causing you to lose heat faster and your core temperature drops. Still warms up your hands though, so as long as Bob isn't doing a 6 hour set at the annual eskimo ball I think he will be fine.

My mum (the concert pianist) is hysterical about protecting hers - refuses to go NEAR a horse or an ice-skating rink (though is more than happy to use loppers and her garden shredder?!) ???

My son, when he was 3 made a comment about warming up his hands by "haaa-ing on them" we didn't know what he was on about until he cupped his hands together and breathed warm air on them as you normally do, making the "haaa" sound.

+1 to the stretching before a gig. it really wakes you up. I stretch like I'm going to run out and play rugby; my legs, arms, neck... the works.

I attended an outdoor festival last week end, Blackout in Kempton Park to be exact. It was flippen cold, coldest I've been in a while. At ten we called uncle, and there where 2 bands left to go. I could see the guys on stage struggle, reminding of a festival gig we did 3 years ago under the same conditions, and I would never do it again. No matter what I did I could not get warmed up. My hands where buggered for days. Its just not worth the injury.

I do love the alcohol solution though!

But what works for me is getting a nice fat grip on my power valves and getting my bassist to turn on the amp!!!

PeteM, sorry about the finger injury friend. Hope it heals up soon and that there is no ongoing problems from it.

What is nice here in the USA is that many restrooms have hot air blowers fitted in them. So if your hands are cold and it's almost time to hit the stage, you break away from the ladies at the bar and shoot in the restroom to see if there is one available to give you a hot blow job right quick. ?

Actually some of them you can rotate the vent and blow at your face. Excellent during high hair days for a final touch up with some Aquanet right before going on.
