I suffered through the '80s as much as anyone else in my age group. But truth be told - there was a lot of good mixed in with the bad: Aside from the heads we had many good bands popping up (it just didn't feel like it if you listened to the top 20). The Police, Tears for Fears, et. al.. Plus we had DeeJays like Chris Pryor and Rafe Levine who mixed a lot of very fine music into their shows.

I have to be honest though - Sigue Sigue Sputnik? C'mon... ?

+20 Tears for Fears - Their music hasn't actually dated too badly. Talk Talk also very underrated 80's band.

+1. Madness, Dire Straits, INXS, Men at Work, Yazoo, Eurythmics, et. al.. Lot of the older artists still going too (although they didn't always get airplay). My favourite era of King Crimson was their '80s stuff...

The Boss was on a hot streak in the 80s (though he's not really an 80s artist). The River, Born in the USA (which is an over-hyped record but still a good record) and the more reflective, darker Nebraska and Tunnel of Love.

I think the 80s was the era when they started playing around with mixes a lot. The clip I posted here has the audio as per the Tunnel of Love album. If you view the actual promo clip that was released at the time the song actually sounds different! Longer intro (on a single?), guitars further up in the mix, the double-tracked vocal gone.... why did they do that? I used to hear something I liked, buy the album and then find that it didn't quite sound the same, or, as in this case, buy the album and then get bugged by the video or the radio single.

OK... I just got it. They were mixing and presenting things so that they looked and sounded good on MTV.

? They encapsulate that particular brand of 80s silliness for me... if you asked for a serious opinion I'd have to say the only widely known 80s release worth listening to nowdays is Appetite for Destruction.

Fair enough - they never made any bones about being a caricature designed to sell things and make money. Anyway I can't really talk 'cos I liked Trio (remember Dah, Dah, Dah?) ?

REM... some bands almost sound like they're not operating in the decade they actually are in... which in this case is a good thing!

Was watching this dvd again the other night, PIXIES, live circa 1988.
The low-budget aesthetic of the concert is quite refreshing, as I find modern live dvd's
near unwatchable with all the frenetic MTV style choppy editing.
They almost come across as a student band.
Made some pretty cool music back then.

EDIT - the sexiest words EVER spoken are the words "Jet-fighters..." in the 99 red balloons song... she actually pronounces it with a "...urs" at the end of the word 'fighters'....
