Short of major incident causing major mental illness I don't think it ever does get put out if it is there in the first place. If there is no fire there now, there probably never was.
Sure the guy can play, but some of the best players I've seen are the "naturals" - the guys for whom the technical stuff is instinctive and natural. These folk very rarely make music their life (I suspect partly because it is too easy for them - offering no real challenges). Often these guys get quite far on their raw talent, because for them it is easy to do so and they get pushed down the predictable paths by others who recognise the skill and are in awe of it. But then one day they wake up and realise that its not what they want to be doing with their lives - and drop out, leaving everyone else (particularly those of us who have to work hard for it) scratching their heads.
I think the above scenario is quite possible in the case of Eliovsen. Being laid up with a broken leg gives a man time to think...
