I find him a lot easier to listen too than Mckee, Don Ross etc, he has that extra musicality that makes this more than just tapping and gimmicky.
This is my opinion about him as well ? Out of all of these contemporary style acoustic players he definitly is my favourite, his solo albums and the one he did with Tommy Gauther are just amazing. With the other players of this vein I often find that an album will have three or four really strong songs but then the rest will just be filler pieces that meander and don't really say much.

What's with the material hanging down from the headstock?
It is sort of for the look as mentioned by
Paul E and I suppose it has sort of become his signature thing now. The real reason it's there though is because often on guitars where the wood quality is very high and responsive you find that the strings behind the nut can ring and create sympathetic resonances that can feedback etc. The piece of material prevents this, often with metal guitarists where rhythm playing has to be inhumanly tight you'll see either a hair band or a piece of neoprene on the headstock or under the strings for this same reason. The hairband is always a nice call cause you can roll it onto the neck and it helps to deaden the open notes, making eight finger and long regular tapping lines a bit easier and cleaner.

What guage strings would he use and would the action be a bit higher, I have tried on my Takamine with 12's and it's not easy to tap/hammeron with your left hand.
In interviews I've read it appears that he likes his action quite ridiculously low and he uses .013 gauge sets. His guitar is his own signature made by a company called Stonebridge ?

The material is his signature look, he has it in all his videos. I must agree, dufour is a musical genius, I'm so surprised that he hasn't become more mainstream as he has. I look at Don Ross and Mckee and I think Dufour should be out touring with those guys!
Well Antoine Dufour, Don Ross, Stefano Barone, Ewan Dobson and Andy Mckee are all signed to the record label called Candyrat, they've all gone on tours together and competed in finger picking contests. Michael Manring occasionally joins these guys on bass and Candyrat has a whole host of other really interesting artists including Stephen Schackinger and John Mclaughlin. All things considered I don't think he's doing too badly, after all the man has a signature guitar and within two days of release this video had 22000 hits ?
