Are you implying that all reviewers are paid to punt the products they review? In that case they're doing a poor job when they use words like, "lacklustre," or, "uninspiring."
I did a contract for a very large music distributor, spent many days at their offices. A 'journalist' from a magazine(which no longer exists), came around and sat with the marketing manager, who basically dictated reviews for products, word for word. I asked him about it(marketing manager)and his reply was that they are the largest advertiser in the magazine??!! I'm also alarmed at how many reviews come up online which are just plain lifted form the product brochure. The best source of unbiased info about gear is on this forum from all you guys. 8)
I agree about fora - even though there are sometimes plants to spread misinformation.
But judging journalism for integrity can be done to a certain extent. The laziest, most despicable reviewers are easy to spot. Certain review sites build huge reputations based on doing the hard work - with thousands of fans ready to pounce if they smell a rat. Plus reading or viewing multiple reviews makes a big difference on the internet. The pro reviews I read are very explicit when the quote from the press release.
That journo you're talking about should be f&%$ing ashamed of himself. Then again, forget the content. Most niche mag writers in SA should be utterly ashamed of themselves for their language use - our own M. Rattcliffe excepted of course ?
