Borderline case Gareth. AFAIC, it leans just to the acceptable side.
I'm no fan of Telkom myself, and immediately bristled when I saw their name, but David is from We Swing Cats (the production company), not Telkom itself, so I let it slide. He was also responding on a topic that was started by someone else, not himself, and I regard the fact that he took the time to do so as a positive thing.
I for one are glad to see Telkom are putting some of their ill-gotten gains into sponsoring a musical event (for whatever reason) - or would you rather they stuck exclusively to sponsoring sports? Corporate sponsorship is part of the music business, like it or not.
Does anyone else have any comment on this?

As you all know I am probably the most vociferous member of this forum when it comes to sticking it to the man, gets me into a little trouble once in a while. I loath Telkom and Poison Ivy but I agree with Alan whole heartily rather them supporting the arts than sport. Hell I would even wear Telkom Underwear if they supported my music so in short I don't think the plug corrupts "The Rules" much ?
MiKeZilLA
Nah well on-side. Had it been sponsored by Bothners we wouldn't have batted an eye lid money is money and in this case by the sounds of it Telkom is coughing up a nice chunk of change to do this right so well done to them on changing their myopic sponsorship practices.

Thanks. I know your views on Telkom are similar to mine, so I was waiting for you to chip in.

You mean "In shorts" don't you? ?

Telkom sponsoring the arts ?
No wonder the weather has been so crap. Well hats off to them then ?
Maybe if we plug this right they'll sponsor a vital upgrade to the troublesome communication link between our Administrator and the rest of the forum members ?

Point # 2: "Not to be confused with a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, DO BAND UP is unique, and consists of a completely novel format" - sounds all too familiar - Coca Cola Popstars/Big Brother anyone ?
I would even consider entering, so long as the "reality TV" side of things isn't too dominant - that format really has been done to death !
Manfred-Klose
Well some musos are good actors and some are not!!!!!
What if it turns out a popularity contest like idols/popstars/big brother.
The winning band members will be chosen by popularity rather than musical talent, will it be like that?
And then the band stays together for 2 months, and each of them go SOLO, because an EGO has grown on them from trying to be popular in the house!!!
I'm not saying that it will happen!!!!!! I'm just being skeptic. ???
David
I think it is great what you are doing, Please prove me wrong, and make a success of it.
I wish you all the best.
Joey
I agree with Manfred. I think especially the younger contestants will easily fall victim to "the ego-syndrome".
Can somebody shed some light for me on how they are going to choose the winners? David, would be great to hear your comment on this.
I must also add that if it does work, I think it will be a great opportunity for really talented musicians that just need a break...

David has asked to let you know he will be responding to your queries about Do Band Up tomorrow.
Also, please note he has let me know that the list of songs mentioned in Tailon's post will not necessarily apply. Apparently the list changes for every person who registers and they do not want people to learn the wrong songs for their audition.
DoBandUp
Hi all,
Firstly, thank you Alan for the reply above and regarding the song list. Much appreciated.
Where to begin? The competition in it's current form has been carefully formulated to ensure that the musicians that eventually wins, will have complete control over their careers. Yes there are record deals, management contracts etc. but the bottom line is this competition is bigger than all of us.
It's not about the sponsors, it's not about what songs you need to audition to, it's about the end result. A life-long career in an industry we all love.
This is not a talent search or -factory. Any and everyone that comes through that proverbial door will have talent. Whether you can string only two chords together or play a basic four-four, you have a talent and a will to be there. And it's up to YOU to get yourself a spot in the final four.
The judges will score you on 10 major criteria points. This will be done in real-time, so you can see exactly who scored who, and how much. The bottom eight muso's are then up for eviction, and the public has 3 days to vote for their most favorite person. The bottom four are then evicted and the process repeats itself.
Why do we give you a set song-list to audition to? We have selected songs we know will allow you to perform you instrument at it's best. And also to make things fair. If you have been playing Steve Vai tunes or jammed Metallica your whole life, then we would like to take you out of that comfort zone and test you as a musician. The housing arrangements will take care of the personality test.
And for fear of "another profit making punt": MikeZilla - Bothner is involved through their Fender brand. ?
After walking around with this idea in my head for many years am immensely happy to see it finally come to life, and even more so, see the interest from forums like this.
I'll check in often so fire away and shoot some more questions my way!
Rock on!
David

Hi David
Thanks for the in-depth response !
Sounds interesting !
You must excuse my (and naturally others) apprehension in regards to this topic - the "2 good 2 B true" syndrome is probably
the case - could be cool.
How do the audition lists work ?
1.) Each time you register/apply do they get given a unique list
of songs or 1 of several possible combinations of song
choices ?
2.) Regardless of the song content of the 1 response in this
thread, are there 14 songs per candidate to learn ?
(Or do you learn a certain number from the 14 ?)
3.) How much time from the moment you register/apply to the
moment you do the audition ?
Sorry about all the Q's but when u go 2 Telkom's site it's less than helpful - doesn't want to load all info on screens
Thanks
VV
DoBandUp
Hi VV,
It's definitely going to be cool!
Right:
The audition list will spit out 14 or so random songs from a list we prepared. They might be the same for some, but contain one or two news ones for other. So it's in essence the same list, just with different combinations. You only have to pick one song.
Although we present you with 14 songs, you only need to learn and audition the one you select. We suggest being able to perform it as it currently is, and perhaps another style, tempo or even arrangement. This is not a must, merely a "under the table" tip from my side.
As for the audition dates, they are:
30/31 October 2008: Stellenbosch
3/4 November 2008: Durban
6/7 November 2008: Bloemfontein
10/11 November 2008: Johannesburg
13/14 November 2008: Pretoria
So the time scale is completely up to you.
As for the website: I've sent some more info through to the folks at Telkom to update the web with, so all the info should be there shortly.
Dave

Hi David
Thanks 4 response again !
PS - for 1st auditions, do you audition with a backing track minus your instrument, or just get grouped together with other instrument players to make a temporary band setup 4 the auditions ?
Sorry 4 all questions finally auditioned today - I'll try anything once !
Regards
Gareth

Hey VV
Have you already auditioned or just registered for the audition.
I just registered for the jhb audition.
Dave. Do we have to learn both parts of the guitar(lead and rhythm) or what we prefer?
Vintage-Vibe
Hi Gerald
Registered 4 audition - they're only at end of month ?
As to your other point hence my technical questions -
Will there be a "backline" band, backing tracks, CD etc ?
DoBandUp
Brilliant! Can't wait to meet you guys at the auditions!
At the auditions you will be completely on your own. No backing tracks, no session muso's or other competitors. Just you and the song you selected.
Without giving too much away, you need to rock up and jam the song in such a way - alone - to still rock the judges. So if you want to learn only the lead bit, your call. I prefer you learn the song and are able to perform it in such a way that you get the best of both worlds.
I'm in Cape Town this Friday at the Durbanville Kunskafee - drop in if you'd like to chat or have more questions!
Dave

Sounds like a good idea, the whole competition that is... not me entering ?.
Anyway, I thought it would be nice to try, but I am in a band that satisfies all my needs, so no need for me to be followed around by cameras. I see you are at Kunskafee this weekend. My band played there last weekend. What exactly is your job in the music industry, because I see some of my friends are playing this Friday at Kunskafee. Dit you get a tip-off to check them out maybe... ? or do you just follow those bands?
And another thing, when does this show air?
CornFlakes
Awesome I’ve just registered..
Sounds like great fun!
Jonny-Two-Shoes
Hmmm, pity I hate Telkom so much.
But whateva...hope it does well ?
DoBandUp
@Niel, awesome man!! It's seldom that you find a satisfied guitarist! ?
This show is exactly for those folks who needs a stable band to enhance and further their careers. But should you change you mind, you know where to find us! Yes, I do follow these bands as best I can, but we're also working closely with DPK on the Stellies auditions, and therefore thought it'll be a great oppertunity to lay some fears to rest. Come make a turn!
@JTS
Dude, see it as a glorious opportunity to get something back from them. We're talking management deals, international tours, equipment, colabs with famous muso's...the list carries on. It's driven by us, managed by us, and more importantly, controlled by us. You have nothing to lose.
Rock on!
Dave
