We're having such a great time arguing [url=http://www.guitarforum.co.za/index.php?topic=120.new;topicseen#new]here[/url] that I thought we should dedicate a whole topic to the subject.

Do you think it's better to be self-taught, 100% schooled (at a college or something), have private lessons with a good guitar teacher or a healthy mix of all the options?

I personally think that a healthy mix is best so you can be well-informed as well as independent. (You should be able to make progress without a teacher)

I dun know what to vote for. But i firmly believe that when you start out guitar, you should immediately go for classes to get you going in the right direction. Or if you have a totally awesome guitarist friend that you can get to help you. Then you can spend time playing by yourself, but always playing by yourself is a bad thing because you get accustomed to just play with yourself and not other people.

Remember one thing norio, if you where in school you have allot more free time, so going for classes is easier. They can do all the theory and stuff and still have time to jam. We just suffer cos we are old ?

I agree and if I didn't have set lessons in the beginning, I probably would have dropped it long ago.

Perhaps the only rule is that we should strive for constant progress -- whichever way we see fit.

Its not bad playing with yourself. The problem is that ONLY playing with yourself is not good for you if you wish to be in an awesome band later. Ive seen people that RIP it at home and when they get infront of people they suck.

After nearly 20 years of teaching guitar, I've realised that everyone is essentially self taught. A teacher can only guide the student, but the work and real learning is done at home - practising for hours and hours.

And I know it's a bit of a cliché, but I think I've probably learned more through teaching than I did when I studied music! Student's questions have often forced me to analyse things that I'd never thought about. I guess the studying helped give me a good grounding - but only practice and gigging will make you a good player.

My teacher says the same thing and, heck, even Satch has admitted to the tables turning and him learning something from a student.

It's a blessing to be able to teach but definitely not meant for everyone. I think you need lots of patience and, if you have none, you will either fail or you'll find some, real quick ?

Amen Graeme. I've only REALLY started learning when I started teaching. THe strangest questions, that seemed obvious to me, I had to sit and analyze, and it taught me a lot.
I consider myself self taught, but as Satch himself said, nobody on th e PLANET is actually 100% self taught. You watch a live concert, you are being TAUGHT. You ask a question, you are being TAUGHT. Visual learning is by far my favourite way of learning.
