I know I could just google this stuff, but it feels way warmer using my deep pool of knowledge called GFSA! ?
And testing my savvy in the process.
A noisegate is a device used to prevent sustain. ???

Kinda sorda. You choon it to eliminate any sound under a certain level, like fret/string rubs etc. Metal players use aggressive gating to get hat stop start choppy sound.

Yes, but dont get the Boss NS2, Its kinda Ghey. Its a noise 'suppresser', supposedly works on a loop and compares signal before and after FX, which does not make sense, and I could not hear the difference no matter how i tried.

I've never been one to rely too much on effects, just the clean and overdrive on the Marshall has served me well thus far.
But I'm keen to branch out. Have tried the Boss GT8 but it seems too complex. Would prefer to do it with some Stompboxes. Got a Wha pedal and am enjoying it.
Looking at a delay, phaser, noisegate and maybe fuzz.
I'm more of a rythm guitarist, sounds like the gate could do me real well. 8)

I have a Boss ME-50, more like a bunch of pedals thrown together than the GT8, no usb, no drum machine. Pedals are really cool, you can build a totally unique sound by having a unique combination, if you can spend the money.

have a look at a compressor pedal maby ?
its gonna slam your notes closer together.

the only thing i dont like about the boss ns-2 is that is alters the tone too much, and is really crap if you do a long sustained bend.

its not really needed.
many guitar players use it to get noise out of their setup, where they could just shiel the guitar and get decent cables and make shure the amp is in perfect condition

The NS-2 is a noise gate rather than a supressor, and it works OK if you know how to set it.

@Hammeron - noise gates are more problem solvers than effects, made to get rid of noise (hiss, hum, pickup squeal) when you are not playing. They can be (and sometimes are) set more aggressively so they chop off the end of notes, but that's not their main function.

The NS-2 has the same buffers that all the Boss pedals use, so most people don't mind the tone difference any more than they do with other Boss pedals.

Unfortunately some use so much gain that even with humbuckers a noise gate becomes essential.

Trust me, it's a gate. Regardless of what Roland corp marketing say... ? To be completely accurate, it's a downward expander with sidechain keying. A noise supressor is a filter that knocks out troublesome frequencies.

I went to 'a music sop' in JHB looking for a noise gate, the sales man talked me into buying a NS2, probably because they are the agents and had nothing else. Its a pain to set up and I've not succeeded in getting it to gate in any way or means, it just screws up my tone and takes the edge of my distortion, it does not gate. Worst purchase ever.

I don't get all the hate on the NS2, they work really well at the end of an effects loop if you wanna get an incredibly tight tone for metal and djent. The ISP decimator is really the one I see supported quite often, the guys from Meshuggah literally have them built into their signature DAR amplifiers.

You pretty much don't get heavier than Meshuggah ? But those gates fair well with 8 strings which is cool ?

Here's another video of a band I like explaining their rig, the one guitar player actually has a very cool setup involving 3 different noise gates to get the tightness he wants but then has a compressor thrown in there as well to fight against the gates. It seems to yield him a tone that's super tight when he wants it to be and super sustaining as well ?

Ultimately they're very helpful, but not integral if you're not super pedantic ?

EDIT: Just thought I'd mention that all 3 guitarists of Periphery no longer use those rigs and are now using Axe-FX units as their live and recording rig ?

??? The connections are 'IN', 'SEND','RETURN',OUT'. How would that fit at the end of an effects chain? It does not function as a gate, and should not be sold as one. as the paper work says, "Compact noise suppression pedal for eliminating noise and hum in guitar and bass effects and amplifier setups". It says nothing about being a gate, or is this just all Japanese marketing speak?

Sorry to revisit this topic, looks like it was kinda put to bed...

When I'm playing my guitar, I find that after playing a few notes the bottom strings start to sing a bit, I'm assuming the vibrations from the played strings are causing other strings to vibrate as well. Would a noise gate / suppressor stop this from being evident when played through an amp?

Also, I'm assuming either a gate or a suppressor of this nature would limit the evidence of accidental string touches with the pick? Fast solos can get a bit messy with me around :-[

These are all just things you should rectify by practicing more, using effects like these can sometimes deaden and destroy the fine detail in your tone and should potentially be used as sparingly as possible. The only reason I would use a noise gate is to make a really tight rhythm patch or maybe in front of everything else in the signal chain to quiten hum (if your in a house with old noisy mains or something). All the issues you're talking of should be rectified by practicing your muting techniques more and learning to synchronise your hands better.
