I'm busy ploughing (in a most enjoyable way) through those Joe Boyd podcasts I downloaded. There's one segment were he looks at the ties (alleged or actual) between John Lee Hooker and Ali Faka Toure in particular and bluesand west african music in general. At one point in all of this he plays a track by a band I've heard of but not heard - Tinariwen. They're from Mali. They combine traditional Touareg music with a more contemporary, electric guitar driven sound.
It's a small sample so far - one track - but I've quite taken by this, especially the guitar soloing, and I wonder if there are any Tinariwen fans out there who might provide some guidance or even just strong opinion.
Got an album and a live recording, very cool but for my money Farka Toure's The Source can't be beat. Top 3 album of all time for me.
