WHO or WHAT turned you on....Musically ?

a Farmworker, his name was Koos, showed me the chords D,G and A when I was about 5 years old....I was so fascinated by their music and especially their strumming techniques...up and down with small off-beat rhythms in between...some played bottleneck and even had a bekfluitjie (harmonica) glued to the body of the guitar ?.... I guess that's where it started for me. Some years later the music of Fats Domino,Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis just did it for me.....there was this guy who had LP's of these gentlemen and I just knew that's the music I would like to play.. :bopping:

I always loved music, my parents had CCR and Dire Straits and Roy Orbison records and I always wanted to sing like Roy Orbison...anyway, my dad loved THIS song especially and I guess he still does and I get goosebumps when this plays somewhere...do not hear it often anymore, I think it is the best version of the song...that's how my love for guitar started.

Very cool. I only know the Stones's version from Out of Our Heads? Love the guitar. I wonder if this wasn't a big influence on Keef. Has the same simple picked arpeggio as in the beginning of Love in Vain.

Probably a good thread for my first real post.. ?

When I was a kid I loved the Beatles, Carpenters, Boney M, Stones, Zep, or pretty much whatever my folks were into. First thing that made me want to pick up a guitar (and other instruments) was the Purple Rain movie, and I suppose to this day Prince is still one of my primary influences. Great multi instrumentalist and songwriter, and of course an excellent guitarist.

Some of my other influences over the years would be Hendrix, Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Slayer, Floyd, John Scofield, Miles Davis (especially the electric stuff), Earl Scruggs, James Blood Ulmer, Johnny Marr, Steve Earle, Public Image Limited, Bob Dylan...

Guess I'll stop there before the list gets even more ridiculous ?

Another thing that REALLY gets to me: musical posers.

Sure, not everyone likes the same stuff. But if you say you enjoy a specific band, dont just do it to keep the conversation going.

I once knew a girl that basically adapted to liking every band I ever mentioned I liked, just to appear that she fits in with us.
The one I specifically spoke of was Paradise Lost. And she went on and on to length about how much she loved them! So some months down the line I played some Paradise Lost during a braai. And she says: "Who's this?".
