Wicked Grain

This is why I love working with wood and guitars in particular! I got three brand new necks in for painting, the necks are made from birds-eye maple and the fret boards from American rosewood. I could tell that I had something special here.

But wasn't until I got that first coat of sealer on and the grain "popped' only then did I realise just how special they were! Kind of like Christmas morning all over again lol.

Still a little rough at the moment, so at least another coat of sealer before colour. I know which one I'd choose for myself, which is your favourite?

? That middle one...Where did you get the woods from? ???

I get my most of my woods from Maple St timber in Kempton Park. I was ther around 2-3 weeks ago and they had birds-eye maple in stock. I'm painting these for a friend, so I'm not too sure where he got the wood from. My guess is the same place.

Do you or your friend sell these necks or only whole guitars? If you do, do you sell bodies as well?

I certainly wish that all timbers were created equal, but as with all wood, that middle neck is more the exception than the rule! It sure is nice though, when a piece like that comes along and blows your socks off!

the "plainer" one on the right is just not my cup of tea!

I am a huge fan of Birdseye Maple

I have a wicked piece on my Strat, much like the middle one you have there...
Photos dont even do it justice, in the sunlight its just.... wooooaaaahhhh ?

Oh I agree with you on that Brentcgp, that sort of timber always reminds me of carbon fibre and the way light plays around with the patterns, especially when viewed from different angles!
